Dumb Hunting Question

success rates are a lot higher in most of the West.
Nonsense jmr40. Look it up with a simple Google search. Success rates for deer (mule deer) hunters here in Idaho is usually less than 1 in 3. And it's like that in most western states.
It's not even as complicated as how far away you can spot deer either. It's simple - there are fewer deer out here in the west.
Edited to ask: do you really think the reason we are limited to one deer a year per hunter out here in the west is because our "success rates" are "a lot higher?"o_O

Wow Moose hunting would be awesome keep putting in. For my Oryx it was 2nd yr putting in that i drew. I have friends been putting in ten years running.
Hats off to my fellow hunter at 80 yrs old.... you Sir are an inspiration..
I have my sights set on an Ibex before i get to old to hike the Florida mountains down south near Deming, NM. Super cool looking animals.

As has been mentioned, GA and other parts of the south can have plenty of opportunities.

When I was much younger, living in MI, there was a time when landowners and their immediate family members could get one doe tag per day until they ran out. Don’t know how many they had but we got 12 that year and filled all of them. This was in the 90s.

My son shot 14 deer in one year, in WI. WI allows party hunting, and the party he hunts with can't shoot. The fact that they still use shotguns (WI is rifle statewide.) with bird barrels and Foster slugs doesn't help. I personally witnessed two of them miss one doe that got up in front of them, no more than 20 yards. Another missed the coyote he kicked up, 5 shots, right in front of him. It ran towards me, saw me tracking it, veered further out into the cornfield, I dropped it with one shot at 25 yards with my .223 Axis.

In Pa were allowed one antlered deer a year with the basic licensee. But in the late flintlock and archery season. You may take a doe with the basic License. We also can get doe permits for each wild life management area. The amount you can get depends on how many are left after you apply for the 1st round. Out of state hunters can apply on the second round. Then residents can apply on the 3rd round. After that if there is unsold ones. You can pick them up at the court house. Myself i only apply for one. If i was feeding a large family i would get more.

Here in Minnesota there are 130 deer permit areas.
Some have the same law as to what and how many one may harvest.

It is best to know where you are hunting and what you can kill.

For instance, where I hunt, I am only allowed one buck, but down south I could take more meat home.

No question is "dumb"...........

Crazy just looked up Minnesota and in 2020 the DNR set harvest goal for 200,000 deer... thats more Deer than in the entire State of NM.

I guess NM just doesn't have same population numbers because even on private land that still counts as your 1 deer bag limit.
Not gonna lie is pretty depressing. I haven't drawn for deer in 5 years which honestly sucks.
My buddies drew for end of oct hunt so at least i get to hike around and if they tag out (they have 4 tags) ill at least get some meat...better than nothing.
Only recent bright spot was drawing my once in a lifetime oryx tag last year. Some of the best game meat ive ever had and my mount is supposed to be ready in Nov.

I used to live in AZ in the 60's-70's. Not much has changed in the SW apparently. At that time it was one buck with at least 2 points above the eye guard, no does. I worked in N. AZ and saw some outrageous sets of antlers on some deer in the area south of the Grand Canyon. Not many deer but some of them were notable.

As far as hunter success in the west, it was about 1 out of every 3 hunters when I lived there. The best I ever did was our party of 3 had 3 bucks in the bag on opening day. We were all seasoned hunters with good eyes and shooting skills.

Wow with numbers like that you would nt have to ever spend money on red meat at the grocery store....EVERRRR!!!

No, but unless you have friends with available hunting land or deep pockets to buy your own, finding a decent place to hunt to take multiple deer a year is the problem. I can legally take 8 deer this year where I live in Wisconsin. I have the land available to hunt where I could take 8 deer a year if I want. If I and the rest of the family that hunts the property takes 8 deer a year and all the neighbors do too, next year, odds are, there'd be no deer......or it would be like in the past.....1 buck a year, period. Areas with high density of deer numbers regardless of where you are at is either on private land with limited access or public land with difficult access. There is no free lunch or free venison.

Here in MI we can buy a combo license that is good for any combination of 2 antlered or antlerless deer and up to 10 antlerless only tags.
Some areas have point restrictions for antlered.

In my area of Arkansas, I can take 2 bucks, 3 doe. Button bucks don't count as a buck. Can take up to 5 deer with modern gun. If deer are nuisance, can apply for extra tags.

Suuuuuueeeeeee....Lets go Razorbacks!!
I was born and raised up to 4th grade in Springdale and then my Mom moved us out to NM to be near our Grandparents, my Grandfather was a Lt. Colonel in Air Force and his last post was Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, NM. Been here ever since.

If I purchase bow and muzzle loading tags plus put in for and receive 2 doe permits I can legally kill 5 deer per year in NY. Never have, but it is legal. My kids grew up on deer meat. My son never had a beef steak until he joined the Army. Still prefers venison. I normally put 3 in the freezer most years. Now with just the wife and I, 2 keeps us in red meat for the year.

I am from NM and the only way to be sure of elk, deer and antelope tags every year is to buy landowner tags. I moved to Colorado 20 years ago. In Co I generally get two or more elk tags per year, one deer tag, an antelope tag, a bear tag and simply driving three hours to Nebraska I can have 2 buck tags, and basically unlimited doe tags. Or I can drive to Wyoming and have plenty of hunting there as well.

While I do miss NM in some aspects the paucity of tags and the cost of landowner tags is not one of the aspects I miss at all. NM was good to me though, I killed an Oryx in White Sands , Ibex in the Floridas, guided my father on a Siberian Ibex in the Canadian river gorge, (no longer available to hunt), Barbary sheep, multiple elk, antelope, and a few deer, Mt Lion and bear. I was a guide up in the Pecos for about a decade mainly hunting bear and Lion.

That being said Colorado has been exceptional, I’ve drawn moose and killed a record book bull, drew and harvested a Mt goat, and generally get between one and two elk per year with the ability to hunt more if I wanted to. I get a mule deer about every other year and antelope anytime I want to. The only special tag I haven’t drawn in Co is a bighorn. The problem with Colorado is that the human population has exploded in the last decade but especially in the last 5 years. While it is easy to get elk tags the hunting for elk in most OTC or low draw point units is freaking over crowded and miserable. I don’t do it anymore.

Colorado needs to to start limiting tags on elk because the quality of elk and the quality of hunting is horrendous on easily accessible areas. When I hike or ride 5 to 10 miles in and I’m seeing dozens of other hunters, many of whom just got scammed by a low rent outfitter on low yield lousy quality ground it makes me not want to hunt there. These poor schleps are paying $7 to $10,000 to hunt OTC units with very low success rates. It’s a scam and these types of hunts are heavily oversold.

You should look into the Oryx hunt on the white sands bomb range they give permits for. They are almost as big as an elk so a lot of good meat there and a trophy to boot.

His avatar is of him posing with an Oryx….And he specifically mentioned having hunted them.

It depends on the zones. The new regs state 6 deer total by different methods if taken in different zones. Some zones allow 3 or 4 while others allow 5, but they are all by a combination of methods. One needs to be a Philadelphia lawyer to read the regs.

Some States seem more interested in the revenues. Galveston county, Texas has a black bear season. Sells permits every year. Doesn't say when the last bear was spotted or taken in Galveston.
Oklahoma sells a Sasquatch license. I would guess, most buy it as a novelty. Again, doesn't give numbers or success.

In Arkansas, it depends on which zone you hunt in.
The lowest is 4 and the highest is 6.

Where I was born, in Alabama, at one time you could kill over 100 in a season legally. A deer a day with a long season, and if I recall correctly a buck and a doe during doe season.
I knew a guy who killed over 40 one year. He didn't buy red meat from the store at all. And just about every Sunday he would have a styrofoam cooler or two in the back of his truck full of meat and send it home with people.
