How do you pack grease in a revolver?

I put a glob of mobile1 in the corner of a zip lock bag . I then cut the tip off bag.
I then squeeze into internals and scrape grease flush with a straight edge and put back on trigger guard.

After hearing @45D and @woodnbow swear by it I decided to give it a go.

It works great. Though it changes the sound pf the action.

I have one ASM 1860 army that has a 4 click action and I have not grease packed it only because the clicks when I pull the hammer back are oddly loud crisp and satisfying.

I use a hypodermic "turkey injector" to "inject" and then use my finger to "pack" it in in the frame. You should squirt some behind the hand from outside with cyl removed.

Four clicks if it has a 1/4 cock notch, 3 if it doesn't, though I have yet to see an ASM with a 1/4 cock safety notch.

Too much grease is not good. Don't pack it but it's o.k. to put a little grease on the internals. Remember, grease attracts carbon, dirt and other product that will ruin your trigger if you don't clean it out and re-install the grease.

I just use a little oil on my internals

Grease seems like over kill to me.

I use Lubriplate 105 assembly lube. It's about the same consistency as Wilson Super Lube. Of course, it isn't necessary to "pack" the grease. I apply a thin layer with a small brush.

I've shot about a "zillion" rounds in competition, works for me.

Lubriplate is also about right for sliding parts in Semi-autos. And available at most any auto parts store.

Smiles,

As I understand it, people pack the internals with Mobil1 and then change it out maybe once a year, cleaning the rest of the gun without dunking it in the usual bucket of water. I am thinking about doing this with an ASM 1851 Navy.

I don't. Do any revolver manufacturers now or ever recommend packing it with grease? This idea sounds like an internet echo chamber thing, but not something that should really be done if you don't want to gum up the action. Grease after a while dries up and turns gummy and hard. You'll just have to clean that out at some point. Why?

About the clicks,
If I pull the hammer back as I regularly would to cock the gun it has a crisp 3 clicks. If I pull the hammer back internationally slowly to hear each individual click I hear 4.

Do you have any pics of that 1851? Id love to goggle at it!

I had no opinion on grease packing the internals with mobile-1 .

Then...

I tried it....

Now all my guns are grease packed and it really does make a huge difference in keeping the action running smoothly also in cleaning time.

Youd think it would gum up and affect the gun negatively. But that's not the case.

I urge you to give it a whirl.

If you dont like it after trying it grab a q-tip and scrape it all out. No harm no foul

My mistake: it is an ASP, not an ASM. Date code is AB which the innerwebs tells me is 1976.

Pics hopefully attached.

Ok, if there is a little oil and or a little grease on parts you want to protect . . . and grease/oil attract carbon, dirt and other stuff . . . where is the carbon, dirt and other stuff going to be found? On/at the parts you want to protect . . .

If you fill the frame with grease, how far is it from the point of entry (bolt window in the frame, trigger opening, hand slot, hammer slot unless you have an action shield) to the "parts you want to protect"? Think it may get caught in the " excess" grease and maybe never get to your parts? That's pretty much how that works.
Cowboy shooters have been doing that much longer than I've been saying anything about it.
The competition revolvers I've tuned get inspected once a year (usually). I've seen some after several years with perfect parts and no corrosion. Some of my customers that shoot in the desert say it's so much better than trying to fight the dirt that gets in there. Casual shooters will never have to clean the action!!
So much for Internet echo chambers . . .

Gun Manufacturers probably like to sell parts too so why would they tell you to pack the frame?
I pack all of my S.A.s of course and they're all cartridge revolvers (and they have action shields as well)!! Works so well with cap guns why shouldn't my smokeless guns get the best?!!
