I handled one of these in my local gunshop, and I really liked the feel of it. But feeling and shooting are two different things. Does anyone own one of these? I'm looking at one with a heavy barrel. How's the accuracy, durability, reliability? Any breakages?
Do the JLD pieces really compare well to the original HK service rifles? For a service rifle with a heavy barrel, $700 seems like a pretty fair price.
All imput is appreciated.

The PTR-91 is an excellent rifle. Many people think it is better than the HK 91. JLD builds them on tooling that was previously used to make G3 rifles for the Portuguese military. Accuracy and reliability are top notch.

+1 on what Father says. Top notch!

I've had one for a year. 1500ish rounds and no failures at all, other than 2 FTEs during break in, and I think those were caused by too much oil on the bolt face. Accuracy is great--2moa with surplus, 1moa with match ammo. The trigger was a bit stiff out of the box, but a quick trip of the trigger pack to Bill Springfield and he had it all cleaned up, down to 6ish lbs, and back to me in a week for $45.

I've added an HK21 butt pad and an HK heavy buffer to mine too. I got tired of sore shoulders after a day at the range. It's got surplus G3 furniture ($15 at CTD) and a sling on it now too, mostly because it was required for the new pad and buffer, partially because the stock PTR stuff is pretty thin. 20 rd mags are so cheap it's not even funny ($2-$3 is common, one place had 50 for $50 a while back). I bought 10 and keep them loaded in my SHTF stash just 'cuz I can.

The heavy barrel is accurate, but it isn't necessarily the cat's pajamas. The rifle is heavy already and the barrel certainly doesn't help. The heavy barrel also takes longer to cool down--the rifle gets pretty hot if you go through a few 20-rd mags in a short time.

Buy one, you won't regret it. I think it's the best buy out there for a battle rifle.

The *only* downside is that the availability of good 308 surplus is starting to wane. That may be temporary though, and worst case I can use new Lake City stuff at about twice the price (2 x dirtcheap = still not too bad).

Well, Father knows best beat me to it, just like he does on every PTR-91 thread. Darth Muffin said it all, cant argue with anything he said, and cant think of anything he didnt. I just ordered a new stock set for mine, because the one that came with it felt like it came off a cheap airsoft. Oh yeah, and the magazine release is stupid.

good looking rifles, wish I had a current picture of mine but this isnt my computer. Mines pretty much stock (until the HK stock set comes in), green, wide forearm, with a low profile scope mount and a Leupold 3x9x40

Oh, I forgot to mention that I hope you don't reload :) It's pretty brutal on brass. That is, IF you can find the brass. That's a big IF since mine throws brass 30-40 feet. However, I have talked to people who said they get 3-4 reloads out of HK fired brass before it's trashed. There are port buffers and brass catchers available that might help the situation.

I agree, the magazine release isn't very good. It's the same way on the HK-91 though, which is what the gun is modeled after. The mag release is that way because a pin holding the front of the trigger pack in had to be removed to make the BATF happy so you can't easily swap in a full-auto trigger pack from a G3. You can get a taclatch to fix it if it really bugs you (http://www.taclatch.com/). It looks like Father has one on his already, I shall have to ask him how easy the install was.

But damn, what a fun gun this thing is!

I do have a Tac-Latch on mine, and I love it. The Tac-Latch rubbed on the receiver of my PTR, though, so I had to remove a little material (from the Tac-Latch, not the PTR) with a bench grinder. Total installation time (including time on the bench grinder) was about 30 minutes, though now that I know what I'm doing I could probably do another one in less than 10. No mods to the PTR are required, so you can always swap the original parts back in. The Tac-Latch sure makes mag changes quicker and easier.

Hey Darth Muffin, where did you get that HK21 butt pad? Wouldn't mind having one of those myself...

Did JLD change the receiver to accomodate the paddle mag release? This is taken from the front page of the Tac-Latch site:

FYI: You must have a cut-out in front of the trigger guard like on the real HK's for this product to install at all. JLD Enterprises's PTR91 presently does not have this cutout and in a recent discussion with them they mentioned that they cannot remove this sheetmetal tab due to BATF ruling. According to them it was illegal to remove. Buyers of the Tac-Latch who perform this act of modification are at their own risk and JB Mfg is NOT responsible for any infractions of the law.

What's up with that?

There are two ways to make a Tac-Latch fit a JLD receiver. One is the mod mentioned on the Tac-Latch website. That's a pain in the arse. Don't do it. The other is simply to grind a little off the clevis (the pivoting part of the Tac-Latch) where it rubs against the inside of the receiver. It took me just a few minutes on an 8 inch bench grinder. I have no idea why the people at Tac-Latch haven't figured out that with a slight change to the dimensions of their part it becomes a drop-in to a JLD receiver.

Cool, thanks for the explanation.

I own a Kurz model JLD91

Well, if anyone wants to know, this rifle is incredibly accurate. The only problem I have with the rifle is with the Springfield Scope on it and the claw mount, the gun is an exercise in weight lifting. Love the gun though.

From a guy on the forums at hkpro.com. He's sold out now, but if you keep checking the buy/sell/trade area there you may find one. Or you could post a wanted ad.

How much are you guys paying for the PTR91? I see on Impactguns it has the base model for $789. Every show I go to only has like one and its $1100 or more.

I've traded emails today with John Berenyi, who owns Tac-Latch. The basic problem is that the Tac-Latch is a side business of his, and he doesn't sell many of them. He doesn't have the money to buy a couple of PTR-91's and experiment, so he's relying on reports from users. I told him that I got my Tac-Latch to fit by grinding a radius on the clevis. That interested him, but to verify it he needs a blueprint or measurements of the modified part and a JLD receiver or two for testing.

I've agreed to loan him my PTR-91 (with the modified clevis), and I have a buddy who may loan his, also. John is going to see if he can change the specs of the Tac-Latch to fit the PTR-91 without requiring any mods to either the part of the gun, and if not, then at least provide instructions for how to modify the part to fit.

To be continued....

Sounds great, does he have a website, phone, or address?

Finally got a current picture of mine

Bill Springfield can install a G3 paddle magazine release for you. He did mine and I couldn't be happier.

The G3 release is very intuitive: grab magazine, fingers or thumb curl around paddle, squeeze and remove. Simple. The TacLatch requires a side to side manipulation to release the magazine as opposed to a simple squeeze. The one exemplar of the TacLatch equipped rifle I examined left me cold.

Bill Springfield trigger work

Bill is http://www.triggerwork.net/ and he is a legend on any board you go to. He does fast, consistent work that is reasonably priced. The most common comment is that it's the best money they've spent on the gun. It's been that way on 3 so far for me and I have an AR set and a shotgun group to get to him soon. It's tough to be without but in my experience his turnaround time has been shockingly fast.
If you have anything that he works on, put it in the box and mail it to him. You will thank yourself. Bob
