Ruger GP100 found for $440?

I'm not sure what used prices are like out there...but that seems a little high for a used GP100. You might want to shop around a bit more. There are used and NEW ones listed on Gunsamerica for less than that...some of the used ones are $100 less than that.

How long is the Bbl? Stainless or Blue? these would help in determining a fair Market price.

Mine has a little noise internaly when I shake it. Have not field stripped it to find out what is doing that. shoots fine though.

I'm not sure what the market price is where you live, but in this part of Alabama you should be able to get a new one for that price. Great guns, though, whether new or used.

Have you considered buying a primo stainless Security-Six instead? The GP-100 was Ruger's solution to a problem that affected only Smith K-frame revolvers. Smith had to beef up their revolvers and Ruger felt it had to do the same, despite the fact that the Security-Six didn't need beefing up.

Your choice, but a 4- or 6-inch Security-Six is hard to beat for weight. It's trigger, when new, is a bit stiff; however, after dry firing it for about a week it becomes like glass, especially if you put in Wolfe springs.

The GP-100 is a bit blocky, but it's a fine revolver. I would try to find one at a lower price.

The rattle you hear is the ejector rod. It is normal for it to rattle.

not a bad price...but I'm from Connecticut and everything is more expensive here. You'd think they would be cheaper since ruger is in CT....but they aren't

Well, I had to bite the bullet and pay about $40 more for a NIB one in Madison, it was the best price I could find in the area, and the cheaper ones online could require shipping +FFL fee and it usually worked out to only saving me like $40 dollars or something, I paid the extra for convience. Plus I hate buying things like that online, I want to personally inspect anything I am coughing up hundreds of dollars on.

Mine rattles too, and I have found that it is the dissassembly pin stored in the grips, just under the grip plate. If you take off the plate you'll see a small pin in there, used to field strip the gun, so the rattle is perfectly normal.

The one on the left is a 6" Security Six. The one on the right is a custom one-off. It looks like a 4 or 6" Security Six, with the barrel shortened to 2.75", fixed sight conversion, polished and I would guess a round butt conversion also?
Am I close Confederate?

I think you can find a brand new gun for less than you are considering for a used one. Check out Gunbroker.com - search for GP100. Just last November I bought a blued GP100 for $402.60 plus $10 shipping. This was from Wilson & Associates, also known as KsTactical, in Oklahoma. It appears to me that this company regularly auctions new GP100s, blue, with either 4" or 6" barrels, for that price. I was well satisfied with my purchase. In this case, it's not really an auction - if you bid the starting price, you'll get the gun.

Like a lot of posts already told you, that price is too high, you can get a new one for the same price if you look around.

I agree with you, Confederate's 4" Security Six is a great looking revolver. I would like to have one of those if I could fine one in that condition.

A new GP100 4" stainless goes for as low as $455 in my area. I've seen the same used for $375.

The rattle may also be the hammer block safety that is visible when you cock the gun in single action - it's visible down inside the hammer as a roughly rectangular shaped piece of metal sticking up from the internals.

The rattling is normal, but the price may be a bit high. If it is nice though, it is hard to turn down a gun because the price is a tad higher than you'd like. I would have preferred to get my S&W Model 14 for $320, but $350 didn't stop me.

That rattling is the internal safety bar that is loose when the hammer is not cocked. Its normal for the GP 100 so don't worry. Though not many other L frames have that problem, oh well.

The rattle you hear is the transfer bar. Cock the hammer and look inside and you will see it. Its near the firing pin. This is normal.

...so what's the going price for a NIB GP 100 in 2011? Lowest I've seen so far is $495 (SS - 4" bbl)

I paid $470 out the door for mine.

That is not a custom one-off. It is a Speed -Six. A fixed sight 2.75" Service-Six with a round butt.

I paid a bit over $500 for a used 4" GP100 not long ago and was pleased because that particular GP100 has near-perfect barrel/cylinder alignment, timing, etc. etc. If I had not been allowed to carefully examine/measure the gun, I would not have considered paying that much for one.

While I got it to shoot IDPA matches, it has already produced the best score I've ever shot at our local Bullseye matches.

I also paid "way too much" for my wife's Combat Masterpiece which I got her for Christmas, 1972. I paid the full $92 asking price because that gun measured out near perfect. It has provided a lifetime to fun shooting for her and has been one of her favorites all these years.

Bottom line: If you are happy, who cares what you paid to get exactly what you want. Besides, in a couple of years the price will be twice what it is today and everyone will think you "stole it."
