How good is a Simmons scope?

My father in law gave me his .22 with one of those scopes on it. Keep in mind, it was made back in the 80's, but he had it on his 30-30 before that and it's always held solid.

I have a Savage 110 in 30-06 which came from the manufacturer with a 3-9 x 40 scope. I have put about 500 rounds thru it with no problems.

I have a "good" simmons whitetail expedition that on a 30-06 no problems there.. I wouldnt mind having another one,but they are not made anymore...

Others will probably bash the simmons name, or at least the newer scopes of thiers..but if you didnt buy it then why nto give it a try, if it fails you wont be out anything

I never had the problem with the German Simmons scopes have few of them, the last one I got has range finder, light enhancer, wind andthe 9 yards and it works much better then my Nikkon or bushnell.

I bought a Simmons Master Series "Blazer" 3x9, $29 from Sportsman’s Guide, for my budget Savage 200 in 30-06 low buck project gun. I have maybe 100 rounds through it no problems, holds zero. The only thing I have to compare it too is a Millet DMS-1, $220 scope. The Simmons is far brighter and clearer than the DMS-1. The Simmons is excellent at dawn/dusk light. Of course I don't have a $500,600,700 dollar scope to compare with.

For my money, Simmons.

Every Simmons scope I've owned has given up the ghost in quick order.

And I had one in .270 that lasted maybe 500 rounds before all of a sudden the reticle was canted about 30 degrees. Happened just that fast too - one shot it was fine, the next shot, it was game over.

Right on, it's one of the 110's that walmart sold with the scope on it. I plan on upgrading it to a Nikon, but it's what's on it for now.

Then it should be ok, but I would upgrade sooner than later if you can afford to.

I wasn't impressed with it, but I didn't feel it was bad enough to make me want to replace it right away.

I have a 2.5X10 power - 50mm that is about 10 yrs old with zero problems. Killed many deer, tons of hogs. Even a few yotes. Like most of the low end brand scopes if you pay under $100.00 retail- not so good. Over $100.00 better luck IMO

Simmons big problem is it won't impress anyone with how much money you've spent.

Have had some "old" Simmons (44 Mag) in the past and they did not serve me well at all.

Simmons' big problem is that I've yet to have one not crap out on me after 4-5 boxes of ammo.

The scope MIGHT hold up for a little while.

I have a scar between my eyes that reminds me why light 30-06 package guns fitted with cheap Simmons scopes featuring NO eye relief is a downright DANGER to the shooter.

I have fired a number of high power rifles with the Simmons 8-point scopes (3-9x40) and they hold zero. I am a fan of Simmons. They are not fancy, but they are clear and hold their zero. That is not to say that they are on par with Leupold, Zeiss, or Swarovski, but for the money, they are certainly hard to beat.

Simmons is the worst scope I've ever owned. My time is too precious to mess with junk.

Nikon, Weaver, Sightron, Bushnell Elite, Burris, etc. Heck, even the Korean made Bushnell I had was better. Plenty of affordable scopes that are decent.

EDIT: I also have a sneaking suspicion that many people don't realize their scopes aren't holding zero. Scope problems can be a little disconcerting sometimes unless they're really dramatic.

Great. I have two Simmons Whitetail Classics that I bought on sale from Midway for ~$110 each. One is on a Rem. 700 in .30-06, the other is on my old Rem. 514 .22. Haven't got to shoot them much, so I can't speak for them.

Now its time to start a rant on BSA scopes.

Actually, what I should have said is that I was speaking from experience. I've had scopes go bad, and it has taken me quite a while to realize it.

I had one that I mounted on a Model 29. The recoil destroyed it before one cylinder full. I was told it would take it by the dealer. I took it back to the same dealer and he sent it to Simmons. It came back fine but I decided on using it on top of a 617 after that. Been fine since. Great dealer/manufacturer service.

Have two Simmons & they have been OK so far. But they are on lighter recoiling rifles 223 & 20 Tac.

The only Simmons that I have had to fail was a 3x9x40 that I got in a trade. It was mounted on a Savage Model 111 in .300 Win.mag. I don't know if it came on the rifle or if it had been added but the guy I got it fromm said that he had only shot it 3 times and decided that it was too much rifle for him. In handling the rifle I could hear a rattle and removing the scope fixed that. Three rounds of .300wm and it was trash.
