Would you take the AR15 or M1 Garand?

Who here would choose an M1 Garand over an AR-15?

All things equal, not worrying about price or functionality - I’m curious who would take an M1 or similar milsurp rifle over a modern day AR?
I feel like I’m being irresponsible if I give up an AR15 for a Garand, but why is that? For appearance sake? Because AR’s are supposed to be the ultimate? :barf:
Quite personally I think the AR platform is way over-rated and it’s like blasphemy if I say the 5.56 round is inferior.
To each his own I suppose, for me the M1 wins.

I don't dig the ergonomics of the AR platform, so I would.

But my actual answer to that question was M1 Carbine & SKS, MrsBFD likes her mini14, but I often wish it was a mini30 instead (I doubt she'd notice a difference except for availability of cheaper ammo).

A Garand would be nice, a M1A/M14 perhaps would be better, or a working "tanker" version of either. I like the ergonomics of the Garand, but the 8x capacity and weight added to the cost of ammo keep me at a balance just barely away from buying one from the CMP.

I have both (but two M1s to one AR). I use the rifles for different things. If for some magical unbelievable reason I could only have one or the other, and never get the other one, I would choose the AR. It would be a bit more versatile for what I would use it for.

But, I may change my mind tomorrow.

Much rather have the more ergonomic AR over the M1.

assuming this is a "end of the world, getting invaded, fear for your life" situation, I would rather have a piston operated AR in the wonderful 6.8!

I also have both, and I would pick the M1. Not for any practical reason, its just my favorite.

My father and I argue about this all the time. Every time he drools on my AR I tell him he should get one, and every time he says, "Son, I don't need an AR when I have what Patton called 'The Greatest Battle Implementation Devised by Man.'"

I agree that the 30-06 is a better round than 5.56

Personally I would never sell my AR to get an M1, I would probably soon regret it. Just save your pennies for one.

I am saving for a Socom 16. A friend has one and it's awsome. Similar design and a good compromise I think, expensive as hell however.

I have both and would pick the M1 over the AR any day. It is just a whole lot more rifle, and a true MBR.

I would take either. Both are fun and both have there merits. I never have understood this idea that we can only own one and therefore must decide what is the better rifle for the population. Shoot/own what you like.

Not an AR, but I had a SIG 556 before I got my M1. The Garand convinced me I didn't need the 556, and that I don't like the 5.56 cartridge. I don't have anything under .30 cal now. My next big purchase rifle will be the son of the Garand, the M1A. Standard model, wood stock.

I'm just not a black rifle kind of guy I guess.

Love it, thats just how felt once I got an 03-A3

I do shoot/own what I like but right now with my current funds & situation I can only choose to keep the AR or swap it for an M1...

Very true about the Socom 16 ccjcc81.

I have 2 AR's and 2 M1's.
It's hard to make a blanket distinction without knowing more of the scenario, riots, end of earth, zombies, plinker, whatever. Two very different rifles made for 2 very different types of combat.
If forced to take only one in a blind choice, I would likely choose the Garand. Nothing says "stop" like 30 cal.

there is nothing a garand does that an Ar-15 doesn't do better.

Turn cover into concealment...

That said, a .308 AR is pretty much better in all ways.

cheaper (to manufacture)
lighter
higher magazine capacity
more accurate
better optics platform
better ergos (arguably)
modular design

I have two ARs and one 03-A3. I like 'em all. I've never fired a Garand.

I think either an AR or M1 would suit me fine, though. :)

Punching holes in paper, maybe so. Punching holes in bodies, step back to 600-800+ yards, and it's no comparison. Granted, in the real world, that doesn't happen often. But I would want the best chance to kill someone before they (have a chance to) kill me.

Give me the Garand. Or if it's absolutely gauranteed that I wouldn't need to shoot past 200 yards, Mini-14 or SKS (Mini preferred).

92. Anyone who would prefer to go into combat with an antiquated rifle like the Garand is way too hung up on this anti-5.56 thing and relies way too heavily on nostalgia. No doubt the Garand was the best service rifle in the world… in 1941. Today it is far too old fashioned for combat. Give me the 30 magazines and light weight of rifle and ammo. You can lug that heavy M1 if you want and limit yourself to eight shots followed by a complicated reload process.

You are incorrect, and you should consider doing further research. The garand is effectively incapable of mounting optics suitable for long range shooting, and it is not as accurate as the ar-15. The trijicon ACOG bolts on easily and has BDC out to 800 yards, and has 4X magnification.
