Yeah, so I was putting around the internet last night, my Taurus on the old crate I use as a nightstand, when I came across the Bersa Thunder UC series. That made me FINALLY get an idea through my thick skull.

"Hey, doofus, That Taurus is like a big girl. Fun to be with, but do you want to deal with the staring and the laughter if you're seen in public with her?" That little devil on my shoulder said.

I looked at The Bersa a bit harder. I like the lines, and the capacity in .40 S&W was rather good for a compact, and I'd rather stick to that round to keep from wasting more money on ammo.

Now I sit online yet again, with that little horned freak on my shoulder. I want to know, what else is out there that's an affordable .40 good for conceal carry? I don't want a giant hunk of iron hanging off my hip for the whole world to see(Kinda defeats the CONCEAL part of concealed carry), and my budget is rather tight. This is going to be an investment gun, with...say, $500 max budget. I'm want to get me a nice compact for my birthday, a bit of a treat for myself, so both me and my dad can get our CHLs together.

Anyone shoot the Bersa Thunder UC in .40? Is there any other compacts in .40 in my price range? I'm kinda wanting something new, but if the price is right I won't complain about used(how'd you think I got my Taurus in the first place?:D)

I got about three months to shop around, both online and in-person, to give me enough time to build up my "gun fund". So, feel free to help me pick out a new buddy for the rest of my pistols!

Bersa gets looked down upon as much as Taurus does, So if thats you reason is "Name" keep what you have.
ATM the Kahr CW40 Is at about $425 and lower and a great CCW size wise.
They have a CM9 coming out wich is a PM9 sized gun but with CW prices due to some cost cutting measures, Im not sure about a CM40 tho.

BTW The only time someone will see your CCW is when your at the range, And nobody has dared laugh at my PT1911 thats shooting the bulls out of targets.

Here we go again with Taurus. I have a Taurus Millenium Pro .40 and I like its lines, feel and how it shoots. It is very dependable and I have not had any problems with it since I have run over 400 rounds through it. Quite accurate too. It is also easily carried.

If you can't conceal your 840 you just aren't doing it right. Full size handguns are plenty concealable with the right attire and holster.

But if you must get a smaller gun, I suggest the Smith and Wesson M&P40 compact.

I agree with other who are mentioning the Kahr. You cannot beat the CW9... and the other budget Kahrs for concealed carry. Super slim well built pistols that can be had for less than $400.

The CW9 is $369 shipped or so at Buds. The others are right around $400.

you gotta get rid of the $500 max to fit in with the Taurus gun snobs.....take a look at the Rohrbaugh R9 9mm...then you can drink Brandy and smoke an illegal cuban import while the range-hand reloads your magazines. :D

Huh...well, there goes my excuse for wanting another gun. It was a pain in my rear to find a holster that fit my 840, and with it, even with my longest shirts when I carry it around my property, the bottom still sticks out about an inch. Does anyone make a better holster other than "universal fit"?

I just get tired of all the people I've seen and heard that badmouth Taurus and the ones that carry them.

And I still want another gun(can you blame me?), So I guess this thread is still relevant. The $500 budget is in-fact pushing it, since I don't have much room to spare between paychecks, but I still wanna expand my arsenal a bit.

He is joking with you...LOL

Honestly there are custom holster guys that make holsters for the Taurus but its a lot to spend on a holster when you consider the price of the gun.

Really take a look at the Kahr budget line. You can get the CW40 for $377 shipped to your FFL. Depending on your area a transfer should be $10 to $20.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_51/products_id/40141

Then you can go on to Kahrs website and order a holster for as little as $30.20.

I'm soon getting a Kahr P380-very nice firearm. And yes, there will be those who look down on .380 caliber- but a .380 can kill. Remember- most defensive engagement will be 10 feet or less.

Taurus pistols are a good value & I've found them very reliable. One of my carries is the PT111 in 9mm. With the 3" bbl she carries wwell--- plan to update to a compact 24/7. S&W 40c also great piece and every bit well built as anything out there. Have also had great experience with Bersa & considered getting the 9mm UC.

Some oldies but goodies are the Spanish made Star Starfire M43 in 9mm/.40. These are well built pistols and are less expensive. Also the Astra A70 (SA) or A75 (SA/DA)-- also Spanish made. These pistols are all compacts with 3.5"bbl & CCW easily.

IMHO

I was only joking ab the R9 -- although a range-hand who loads my empty mags would be awesome -- I have a Taurus pt9 that performs flawlessly -- Taurus has a world class manufacturing facility. Simply put -- Taurus today isn't the Taurus of yesterday. Besides have you seen the new Keystone beer commercials? Cheap is the new cool.

save your money and feed that Taurus some ammo! An empty Kahr won't kill the Zombie's that Rellascout is preparing for.

I have a Keltec PF9 as my CCW...if that makes you feel any better. :)

I look for a CCW only to be reliable...if I can get reliable for $50 then that's all I want. If I want some bling then i'll get a 1911 or an AR. If that Taurus performs flawlessly then you have a wonderful CCW gun.

I paid $240 for my Keltec PF9...people smash it all the time...but it's had 2600rounds thru it with zero malfunctions...it kicks like a beast..and is ugly...but she stays hidden in my shirt holster like the girl you keep hidden in your room...LOL

The Zombies are coming.... so you better get ready.

Mbruce as you know I am one of those high $$$ 1911 guys. If it ain't expensive I don't own it and I certainly would not carry it. LOL

Honestly there are a lot of good reliable guns available at low prices. I love my cz82 $150.00 IIRC.

The Taurus line gets knocked all the time because they are a mass market product and they sell a lot of them. They are not bad guns but when something goes wrong with them their customer service can be hit or miss.

To me its all about reliablity. Its all about shootability. If you can get it done for $200 or $300 that's great. The biggest advantage of a cheap defense gun is that it if you shoot someone with it you will not be out a lot of cash because you will be lucky if you ever get it back.

For what it's worth, I got a RIA CS Tactical several months ago and I love it. It's now a .40, I know, but in my opinion it's plenty of gun for most occasions not involving swim trunks. I picked up a G19 for beach days and around the house. (the RIA was under $450, the G19 was closer to $600 due to upgrades)

RIA are good guns but if you are looking to use a gun for defense a 1911 requires a fair amount of dilligence on the part of the shooter. IMHO there are much better low cost low maintaince platforms which are better than the 1911 at the OPs price point.

IMHO

Live within your means and buy what you can afford. If you win the lottery tomorrow you can always upgrade.

Also, bad guys won't spend to much time trying to read the rollmark or looking at the barrel size....

Taurus, Kel-Tec, Kahr, J-Frame, etc, etc...

My suggestion is go small and light. Consider whether you want a safety or not.

...Zombies, you say?

I could say something about the people I see at my work, but that would be in bad taste. Meh, why not.

If you want to see Zombies, go to your local Wal-Mart at three in the morning.

...And honestly...If it weren't for my girlfriend's paranoid brother that thinks all gun-owners are wife-murdering, store-robbing psychopaths, and the fact she isn't on the Cal DOJ- Legal list, I'd never sell my PT840. Sadly, neither are the case and someday I must part ways with this gun. I love the ergos, the takedown is so simple a caveman can do it, and other than having to endure breaking in the extractor and picking brass shavings out of the firing pin channel, she's served me well.

Maybe I should just take that money and invest in what I have? Better holster, more mags, maybe some night sights or a Tac Light? I keep getting pulled from my slumber by Coyotes hassling my landlord's cattle, and carrying the pistol and a flashlight gets a tad bit annoying at times. But if I go tac-light, I can say bye-bye to any decent holster...or do I? I don't know. Haven't seen too many holsters built for stuff on your front rail.

And I will be so happy the day SOMEONE comes out with a higher-cap magazine for this thing....Just for fun, of course.

Well, I suppose you guys talked me out of my next purchase for the time being...But there will always be some poor little semi-auto sitting in a used case somewhere that'll urge me to buy it.

You're making a good decision, at least as I see it. Invest in ammo and backup Rella when his $$$$$$ 1911 gets a spec of dirt in it and won't fire.

Take your gf and her brother out shooting...both will love it. Not sure on the other stuff you mentioned -- we dont have those laws where I live. My wife is a gun freak and her family is still eating spam and vegetable medly from the Y2K stock up -- so i guess i'm lucky in that sense.

Talking my girlfriend into trusting us RESPONSIBLE gun owners is one thing. Her brother....he's a bit high strung. When I overhear him yelling at her during our nightly phone chats, I can't help but laugh.

"DON'T UNDERCOOK VEGETABLES, YOU'LL GET E.COLI AND DIE!!! DO YOU WANT THAT?!"

...methinks he has a few screws loose.

And yes, The California DOJ has a website that outlines which guns are legal to sell in California. Guess what? Not a single Taurus 800 series pistol there. Can't blame Taurus on that one. Gun laws like that are just asinine.

...and really, I'm just passing time right now until my photobucket finishes loading the pictures I have of the meager family arsenal, good for Coyote, Stray, Zombie, and Ninja.

Best one of the bunch.

From Left to right: My Taurus PT840, My dad's Franz Stock .32, and the little French Pistol that I have ammo backordered for.

Of the lower priced guns that I own there are a few that meet your criteria.

1.) Glock 27... can be purchased for under $500.
2.) S&W Sigma 40ve...$250-350 but has a very heavy trigger action.
3.) Taurus PT111 Mil Pro...$250-350. Mine has been 100% reliable, but Taurus handguns are hit or miss when it comes to quality control.

Every one of these guns have been 100% reliable, which is the one thing I judge a gun on when scrutinizing them for SD. Of the three, I carry the Glock 27. The Taurus & Sigma would be reliable handguns if the Glock was confiscated in a shooting. I'm sure others might tell you something different on these guns, but I'm simply going on personal experience. Just saying...

Makarovs can still be had sub $250 and CZ-82's can be had for not much more. I'd rather have either of those over a Taurus and I like some of Taurus's pistols, so not a Taurus or Bersa hater.
