I was searching around to find where HK produces their ar-15's for the civilian market and then I came across some ar-15's that are supposed to be made in Germany. Oberland was one, and the other was Schmeisser. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with either one of the companies, and how they liked the rifle? also, is it possible to get one of these in the US?

Why do you need a german AR? I'm sure that US companies will be just as good if not better.
 
What if you lived in Europe? I will need to buy an AR over there if I can since It's too much of a PITA to ship mine. Why don't you help the OP out instead of providing a non-supportive question? Maybe others on the forum than yourself would like to know about these German made ARs.
 
I would understand if he lived in Europe, but under his location it said "USA". I didn't mean to offend.
I have read good things about Schmeisser and Oberland, but I don't remember if they are available in the US or not. I'll see if I can find the stuff I read about them, it was a month or two ago.

You'll have to ask the Special Forces about that, since it's not available to us civis.
If you mean the HK MR556A1, the civilian modified version of the 416, it's too new on the market to say anything.
"Best"? That's a whole can of worm you're trying to open, there.:evil:
Anyway, I just got this MR556A1 over the weekend. Have not shot it, yet, but it seems well made, typical of HK stuff. You know, technically, it's not an AR, but a gas piston AR.

Wow, your HK MR556A1 is one beauty of a beast! have fun with it on the range, it's probably going to be impossible not to.

Wow, your HK MR556A1 is one beauty of a beast! enjoy it on the range, I don't know how anyone couldn't.
 
The Oberland guns are pricey but fantastic. I have used one owned by a friend and they are excellent, with very high build quality.

They look really nice if and when I emerge into the AR market, I'll definitely have one of these at the top of my list.
 
Shot a H&K 416 (yes, it had the happy switch). Not impressed, especially for the money. Showed me zilch as compared to a DI AR by a reputable company.

Smarter to get a decent rifle and use the savings to get training.

Definitely have to agree with you on that with the rifles pushing near to the $3,000 mark. They look nice but the price is hard to bear especially with the economy the way it is.

I'm surprised about that, H&K seems to make top tier products especially with their carbines and rifles.

Not really. The ergonomics sucked pretty bad on the 91, 93 and MP-5. Mechanical accuracy was good, but difficult to transfer to practical accuracy on the 91/93 series.

The 416 did nothing that a decent AR wouldn't do except make your wallet lighter for zero return on your investment. :eek:
 
There was a pretty big thread going on over at M4C.net about the new Civi version. The general consensus was Meh.

Essentially the 416 is ok but doesn't really add anything to the M4 platform. The Civilian version (MR556) is a hack job that is far to heavy for what it is and has a number of dubious design choices.
