Mosin-Nagant

Hello all! I bought a Mosin Nagant last week for $106.00. It is missing a cleaning rod I believe as there is a large gap underneath the stock under the barrel. Can anyone help me locate one? I am brand new to this and just recently got my bolt back together......:banghead:

Unless you have some sort of collector-grade Mosin or it really bugs you, it's not worth replacing. They blow for actually cleaning the gun, and you can get a much better commercial rod for about what you'd spend on a replacement Mosin rod.

I would say unless your crazy about the looks of it, don't bother. Most folks don't use it to clean their rifle anyway.

It works quite well with teh issue cleaning kit, especcially to scrub the chamber and kep it from building up debreis and getting "Mosin sticky bolt"
Also great for removing debrie and snow that may have plugged the muzzle.

Taking the bolt apart and reassembly is easy with practise, but the first few times are a puzzle

I'd get the rod just to have a "complete" rifle and to keep it clean....worked for many a military, and the gun survived to this day because of it .........

Erwin, is your MN the longer 91/30 or a carbine ( M44, M38, 91/59 ) ? I may have an extra MN carbine length cleaning rod if interested.

Most Mosin owners do not use the issue cleaning rod, and it better serves as aesthetics for that complete look. This is a 91/30 cleaning rod link.

I will try and post pictures tomorrow evening after some more cleaning. I want the rod for reenacting and to keep complete a piece of history, IMO.

I know I am opening an old dead thread but I thought I should update yall. I bought three Mosin Nagant M91/30 rifles with full cleaning kits bayonets and canvas slings. The Grand total without tax: $300.00
I just finished removing the hundreds of pounds of cosmolene off the guns and now have to figure out how to remove it from the canvas and leather. The Metal cleaning parts I am just going to boil in a pot I will NEVER use again. I am giving my sister my first Mosin so that people can get her the bayonet, rod, and sling for christmas. The other two Mosins are going to my god mother and my dad, and I am keeping one for me. Mine is a Tula and the other three are Ihzvesk, is there any difference besides arsenal location? I also noticed that one of the mosins triggers would not release the bolt and fire until the trigger is touching the metal trigger guard. Its extremely loose, how would you fix this? Thanks

insted of boiling anything, you should use a solvet, and gasoline is great for cosmo removal. A can of Car break cleaner is awsome, and you should use that to clean the chamber. You can remove it from the leather by wiping and from the cloth with the solvent.
Once you have the metalk parts un-como'd, be sure to wipe the bare steel with an oil.

Check your 2 action screws, the trigger issue you have sounds like the rear action screw is loose.

I usually use a heat gun to remove the heaviest concentrations, then follow up with mineral spirits where required.

Gasoline may be effective but it is too dangerous for use as a cleaner.

I used Brake-Kleen to clean out the chamber of my Mosin. Cosmoline came pouring out the barrel after I gave it a good spritz of that stuff.

Do this with the stock OFF the rifle, as Brake-Kleen also strips off the shellac finish really well too!

The guns are cosmo free after several hours per gun with several gallons of hoppes 9, gun cleaning brushes, and a thousand patches (JK) The cleaning kits are the big worry, so much cosmo it makes the guns look like a joke.

Remember, cosmoline is your friend! If it were not for cosmo, you wouldn't have any 91/30's to play with.

You don't really need a cleaning rod as in the original. A commercial rod for the same caliber ought to do the trick.

If you have the original, you will have a cleaning rod where ever the rifle gos.
I use mine alot because I hunt,often out for days at a time ,and my home rods (brownells

) stay at home.

I use Milsurp, and to wipe the bore after shooting keeps it shiney and new.

Its all about maintainace and therfore reliability.
"sticky Bolt" is the rifle telling you to CLEAN it......

Steam cleaners are great for cosmo removal. Just don't use it on the wood. Much easier than manual cleaning.

It also works well for cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo. You should see the nasty crap that comes pouring out! I still use a bit of solvent afterwards just in case.
