Ruger Blackhawk question

I took my Blackhawk out to the range, I only shot a full cylinder through it. I was cleaning it today and noticed the screw near your index finger when holding it, your trigger finger, just above the end of the grip, was protruding out further than usual. What does this screw do? Should I screw it in tighter?
 
Definitely tighten any loose screw, with a proper screwdriver that fits the groove of the screw. Did you get the manuel with that gun? It should have an exploded diagram, if not, you can download a copy from Ruger. If I read correctly, that is the hammer screw you are referring to. If you don't already have a set; invest in a good gundriver set that will fit the screws and prevent stripping and burring of screw head.
 
I'd get a good gunsmith screwdriver set and take all the screws out one at a time, degrease them, and put them back in tight with a small drop of blue Lock-Tight on each one.

Single actions are infamous for shaking the screws loose.

If you don't do it now you will be fighting loose screws until the slots are worn clear off.

Did you wiggle the cylinder pin around while rolling and shaking the cylinder to make sure the detent in the cylinder pin had mated properly with the spring in the frame? Sounds to me like the cylinder pin just isn't inserted all the way.

If that isn't the case, yeah, just tighten the little fellow. But I've had two Blackhawks in .44 magnum now that I fire max loads through and never had that problem.

My SBH would practically dissassemble itself during those full-power 50-100 rd sessions, until I got tired of it & did the Loctite thing. Never again a problem...

It's not so much loose, just protruding. I couldn't turn or move it with my fingertips. No manual, got it use.

I hope you got from your LGS, he should be able to over the use and maintenance for it. If not, something to think about for new shooters, there are benefits to supporting you Local Gun Shop Owner!

I did. Mind you... it's just a screw that seems to be protruding more than usual. Add to that, the majority of my local shops are REMARKABLY overpriced and have an incredibly limited selection. Occasionally, though, there are deals. I doubt this particular shop owner is going to help me with a protruding screw on a $300 used handgun I bought a year ago.
 
If you could possibly post a picture of it?

Somebody here could maybe offer a semi-intelligent answer as to whether it is normal, or a stove-bolt from a hardware store.

I guess I'm missing something. I've shot thousands of rounds through my Blackhawks and Old Army and I've not seen any loose screws. I'm the loose screw that's shooting it. :D

Blue loctite works. I've had loose screws on DA revolvers, it's not a single action thing to my knowledge. Blue loctite cures all ills and even tastes like Splenda, though I don't recommend it in your coffee. :D
 
Did you try wiggling the cylinder, base pin and base pin latch all at once? Or is everything so firmly stuck in place that nothing will move? Still sounds to me like your cylinder may not be aligned right with the base pin, which is causing it to mate improperly with the base pin latch.
 
A piece of monofilament fishing line in the screw hole works as well as locite too.
