Converting 30-06 Barrel

Find a local gunsmith and he'd probably be happy to do it for you. Reamers should be available if he doesn't have one already, or if you want to do it yourself.

In order to ackley an existing chamber the bbl needs to be set back slightly to provide a slight crush fit headspace at the neck shoulder junction to faculitate fireforming factory ammo.

The savage system maintains a standing gap between the barrel and bolt face but this usually isn't enough to allow for ackley improving without cutting a couple threads or so off the breach face

You can, but the actual gain with most of the AI cartridges isn't worth the effort & cost.

Way back then, pressure testing was not available and many of the old wildcats were thought to provide spectacular performance.

We know today they did so only by running pressure off the charts.

You actually only gain about 100 FPS by burning 8 - 10 grains more powder.

So is 100 FPS important enough to spend more money on re-chambering, powder & barrel life?
Nothing you shoot with it can tell the differance I betcha.

Its cool to say you have an AI chambered rifle tho...i like the way the rounds look also. But if i was going to do a improved 06, i think id used the Gibbs version over the Ackley.

rcmodel said it right and his logic is entirely correct. If you want a 30-06 get one with the standard chamber. If you go with the improved chamber it will reduce the value of your rifle at least 40 percent, if you can find a novice willing to buy it! BW

I dont see how it would reduce the value of and already fairly cheap, and easily rebarreled, rifle by 40%. You might lose some market of folks who dont handload, or dont know much about an IMP. Its a fine conversion, if your looking for just a bit more velocity, and if done properly will still fire factory ammo.

Or you could just get a .300 win.mag. if you want a .30 cal with higher velocity.

A proper ackley improved chamber will still fire the parent cartridges no problem and is in fact how you get improved cases

I find those powder charges to be a bit exagerated in an 06 case.

FYI......While the Ackley Improved cartridges share the same headspace as the parent cartridge the Gibbs do not. You can not simply drop a parent cartridge in a Gibbs chamber and fireform it as you would a Ackley. The shoulder is moved forward on the Gibbs about a 1/10th of an inch. While not rocket science there is work to be done when forming Gibbs cartridges.

As already stated, a properly chambered and headspaced Ackley can fire the parent cartridge such as the 30-06 sprg in this instance.


I have found that the Ackleys are best when shooting heavier bullets using slower powders. A huge plus with the AI that hasnt been mentioned yet is that case strecth is non existant. Case life is extended if not hot rodded.

I am aware of the change in the Gibbs, I made the comment on as a note, i like the look of it better, tho i doubt it really offers anything extra. Im someone was wanting there rifle rechambered to the Gibbs, id hope the smith doing the work would explain the difference.
