.45ACP large & small primers

Small primer 45ACP cases are the spawn of the Devil!!!!! GRRRRRR, hate em, hate em' hate em'.

I just collect them in a spare bag and when I shoot a patch with my 45 that I can't pick up brass, I'll load them up and bring them.

Waldog, why trash them? If nothing else, I'll gladly pay postage from anyone who want to simply dispose of an SPP 45 ACP cases. If you've got enough, there's always people willing to buy them from you.

Personally, I converted to all SPP 45 brass a while back. Don't need to keep LPPs around this way.

CMV - load them to the same point you do for the LPP brass except if you are at the upper end of published data. Speer's manual has a small paragraph about them and said there may be a slight pressure decrease, may not be enough to measure.

Yes, I separate them since I also load for 9mm. It's nice to have what you know is once fired practically new brass available. I pick up as much of it as I can from folks shooting factory boxes, after I ask if I can collect it from them of course.

Save them for classes/events where picking up brass is not feasible. Or run them through a carbine that chews up brass to the point that it is junk.

I know a guy who just loves the small primer .45 brass. You see, he loads only 3 calibers which are .38 Special, 9mm and .45 Auto. With the small primer .45 Auto brass he doesn't have to change the primer setup on his progressive press. He collects all the small primer 45 brass people are willing to throw his way at the range! Now he only has to stock small pistol primers and saves time on setting up.

Those can really mess up a progressive press. I just load the separate with the SP. I also use them if there is a high probability of loosing them or I want be able to pick them up.

You should be able to tell the difference by looking at the primer pocket. I've been loading around 1000 rds. of both large and small primers, and I can easily spot them after depriming the shells (have around 500 Federal cases with small primers, and some Aguila brass, which uses the large ones).

I enjoy loading the small ones with the auto prime, since they're easier to push in.

I hand sort them. Two years ago they were relatively rare. Today they are quite common. All the ATK brands (CCI, SPEER, BLAZER BRASS, FEDERAL) are all gone to small primers, and word I hear is it will become the new standard industry-wide. I've got a 5-gallon bucket full I am just sitting on for now.

I have found small primer brass to deliver better accuracy in some loads, about 25% smaller groups.

If anybody has small primer 45 brass that they don't want just PM me and I'll pay for the flat rate shipping from your house to mine and take them off your hands.

I like 'em. I separate them and run batches of large/small as my materials allow. I don't load with a progressive, so it's no big deal to occasionally mix up a primer size. Other than loading and sorting I have personally seen ZERO difference in performance and freely interchange small/large with the same load data.

I have read, however, that if you're using a slower powder you might need to work up a new load with a small magnum primer.

I cull them out of the spent brass and set them aside. Once I have a couple of hundred saved up I will load them with a JHP and put them away for a rainy day.

I used to hate them, then I couldent get LP primers for a while, and they were great!

I used have 50 of them mixed in with my regular .45ACP brass. Now I just keep them in a plastic baggie in the coffee can with the rest of the .45 brass. I am honestly not sure why there were ever created. Seems like it would be simpler to just manufacture them all with one sized primer pocket.

This subject has been beat to death on this, and about every other forum. Do a search, since it comes up about once a week. You'll find all the explanations you need. There are two threads on the same subject here right now.......

RC...me neither. I went out to my work area and took a cursory glance through some scrounged brass...no small primers.

I load on progressives and use both small and large primered 45 cases,its just not a problem for me to actully look at the pockets to sort them either when I clean them or when I pick them off the ground.For me, seperating them isn't as hard as I'm constantly hearing the complaints of. Baffle the mind.

I prefer the small primers because I load so much 9 & 40 that I always have plenty of those primers on hand.Plus I also have noticed several loads shoot better with them .
I prime by hand so changeover is a non issue also.
