While at the LGS I spotted a Norinco SKS that appears to be in good condition with a $220 price tag on it...cheaper than I've seen any SKS in a couple years. The only problem is the previous owner bubba'd the rifle with a camo paint job (stock, receiver, bbl, everything). The bore looks clean and I can't see any pitting or other issues with the metal; the owner (whom I trust) also said he had seen the rifle before it was painted and it was in good condition.

Opinions on the Norincos seem to vary from "second only to the Russian" to a piece of trash compared to even a Yugo. I'm sure a lot depends on the individual rifle but what's the deal here? I'm looking for a cheap, centerfire, semi-auto rifle that I can toss in the truck/ATV without worrying about damage and do the occasional plinking. A few questions:

1) Does this price seem reasonable? It's cheaper than any other SKS in the area but with the paint it ruins any collector value (not important to me). I felt the price may still be a little high however, maybe closer to $150-175?

2) What kind of accuracy can I expect on average? Hitting a pie plate at 100yds would be acceptable to me.

Also, if there are any issues in particular I should look for before buying I would appreciate the information. Right now I'm leaning towards seeing if I can get the shop to come down a little and buying it if they do. The previous owner actually did an OK job with the paint and since I just want a shooter it seems like a good deal.

I would offer 160 and see where it goes off there, also I would ask to fire the sks to make sure everything is good.

That was my current plan. If the rifle is functional and I could purchase it for $150-175 I would feel like I got a good deal IMO. Most Yugos I see online go for at least $300 anymore and after shipping/transfer it comes out about the same as buying locally (~$350). The Norincos are even more expensive.

If I was buying this as a collector's piece it would be different of course, but I really just want something I can plink with, not worry about damaging it and goes bang when I pull the trigger. Now that I think about it, I also forgot to mention that it did not have a bayonet and IIRC it did not have a bayonet lug at all. Most I've seen w/o a bayonet have had the ears cut off the lug but the lug itself still attached to the barrel. Being historically accurate is not important to me however and honestly the rifle feels significantly lighter and more maneuverable than other Yugos I've held.

seems like a decent price and while not real accurate should be plenty capable of hitting the plate accuracy at 100 yards.

I paid 200 for an all matching number norinco in good condition here where I leave so that price of 220 is not to far off.

I have 2 noricos they all function fine accuracy isnt half bad. If you dont mind the camo make a offer.

Paint strips pretty easy unless he used one of the super paints like ceracoat or duracoat.

I'd get it if you are looking for a SKS. They are not easy to mount optics on and the extended mags are generally crap. Other than that there is nothing wrong with them.

Sounds like a pretty fair price to me but I would try to negotiate a little. The norinco is second only to Russian SK .imho I have 3 norincos, 1 paratrooper sks ,1 mak 90 ,and 1 sporter 500 sks , which takes ak mags.Should hit the plate at a hundred yards with ease. I agree with briansmithwins on optics mounts and mags.

I wouldn't pay that much for that SKS. Just keep shopping. I'd much rather pay twice that for a new WASR.

200 is not too much to pay for a norinco in good condition, as long as it has not been bubba'd. You cannot beat that price with any comparable semi auto.

I have not seen a Chinese SKS that cheap in a long time. Of the SKSs I used to have, the Chinese where the most accurate......Parts are easily found to restore the rifle. It is worth more in original configuration anyway.....chris3

Misinformation, optics are easy to mount and will hold zero provided you use a scount mount that takes the place ofbthe rear leaf sight. Secondly, I do not know of anyone who has had issues with the Tapco 20 round duckbills. Also, the USA brand 30 round mags work flawlessly. They are rare as USA brand mags went out of business but they made damn good mags and are the only 30 rounders I would trust in an sks.

Everybody I have heard talk say WASR are junk and that they regret buying them. Hmmm interesting.

I got a Norinco SKS for $275, pre bubba'd with an ATI stock, scope mount, scope and extended mags.

In my area, SKS rifles in factory stocks with no add on's are hitting the $350 - $400 range.

I'd grab up any sub $250 SKS with a decent barrel, bore and bolt.

$220 as a starting point is good, use the bubbad paint scheme to your advantage and try and lower the price.

sorry off topic, but not another ive heard this heard that:rolleyes: about the wasr, unless you actually have hands on experience with the new romanian rifles i suggest you handle one before makin comments. or how about starting a new thread about.....ive heard the wasrs are junk, so we can all chime in

Man, have SKS's shot up. I remember buying mine for $180.00 out the door. I admit it is a yugo and it was packed with cosmoline, but it was clean with matching numbers. Now I am thinking I should sell it and buy the ar-15 I have been eyeballing for some time now.

Only the very first Chinese SKS were made on Russian equipment. They are called Sino-Soviet SKS. The trigger is not an issue. If you shoot the rifle enough to become proficient with it, you won't even notice anything about the trigger.......To spend big bucks on a trigger job on these rifles is the magic bullet guys that can't shoot worth a darn buy hoping it can solve their rotten marksmanship. A SKS is not a target rifle. It was designed to be minute of man, even though they will shoot quite well with practice.....chris3

Have you read much about the Tech Sights? A buddy with pliars can help remove the rear sight, which can be reinstalled. I would not consider permanent mods to milsurps, even semi-commercial versions.
My common Norinco is now a very different rifle.

Last week I made nine shots from 50 yards. Just a soft, thin cushion on the wooden block in front, but only my elbow to support the rear.

Of these nine shots, five were in a tight, 1 & 1/2 " cluster, in the very center of the Shoot-N-See's bullseye. Could not believe it.:)
The only regret is that I didn't buy the Tech Sight much sooner....:(.
This SKS can repeatedly hit about any small object from 30-50 yards, with just the front supported, on a fallen tree trunk.

I can't believe how much they went up in price!I paid 50.00 for my chinese paratrooper about 20 yrs.ago when I was young and went through that phase of my life.Do they still Ban import's of them since the gun-ban was repealed? But I do like my chinese sks more then the yugo's.I never took to be a super accurate rifle, considering all the ammo was so cheap who care's?It's not a bad price considering how much they want for one these day's go for it if you want it.

I own a Norinco that's in a black synthetic stock (can't remember the brand at this time) with the 30rd mag. Love that gun. Never had an issue with it. I'd take it over most of my other guns any day. Only paid $225 for it too.
