Can I get some input on what the Shooting, hunting, and fishing in and around the Houston area has to offer, or Texas in general.

Is there alot of public land or is alot of it private?

Thanks for you input.

Not much public land, I think 95% of Texas land is private. However, making friends with some land isn't terribly difficult.

Where in the Houston area will you be?

Fishing offers Salt and Fresh water. You can literally hunt any animal in the world in TX.

However our natural wildlife like White Tail are small, Hogs and Yotes can be found just about anywhere.

Not much public land around Houston nor TX for that matter. Sam Houston National Forest is probably the closest place.

Course we do have Collector Firearms which is probably the coolest gun shop in the US!!!

As others have said, mostly private land although you'll meet someone that owns some of it pretty quick. The game is plentiful but mostly small, unless you're in to hog hunting. Fishing is ample in both fresh and saltwater varieties. Shooting in general is easy enough to do as there are quite a few ranges in the Houston area.

I love the variety there but most of it's overpriced. I've also had some issues with some of the staff. That having been said I think everyone should walk in at least once and it is the place to go if you want something historic/collectable.

Hunting in Texas is generally an expensive proposition. You have to either secure a lease or hunt on a ranch. This includes birds as well as beast. Fishing is another story. The Gulf is fantastic.

Deer leases run from $750 to $15,000 plus feed and up. Essentially, you pay or you do you do not hunt and you pay dearly for what you receive. Acquiring a good lease takes a lot of time, persistance and dollars along with help from asociates.

Saltwater fishing has become a "zoo" with the crowds, freshwater is not as bad.

If you buy a house make sure you check the AIR CONDITIONER! A/C is required in SE Texas and for about 8 months out of the year it runs 24/7. I wish I was joking.

You gotta make some friends who own some land. Texans aren't that hard to befriend and surprisingly many are landowners.

Texas is blazing hot by U.S. standards, and if you have asthma or allergies, in Houston are hellish. It's still a great city, and I'll loan you a tip: there's one road that you can drive down at night, and so long as you go exactly 17M.P.H., you will never get a red light.

You drive an hour from Houston and you are in Houston. Having lived there 25 years, if you are a sportsman hunter, plan on spending time and money getting somewhere else to do it.

Lots of freshwater and saltwater fishing in texas. Hunting is a different story. It gets expensive if you don't know anyone with a big land, or not near a public land.

You are close to the water so there is plenty of fishing. There is a lot of hunting ranches out in the Hill Country and a few up in East Texas and it will cost some money. There are several shooting ranges around the Houston area, both indoor and outdoor.

The LA express ways are fast compaired to Houston Expressways at rush hour. I would live about any place in Texas other than Houston
I like Texas a lot. Just not Houston

Believe it or not....rush hour in Ft. Worth is worse than Houston.....but Houston is pretty dang bad

The air is always greener in Pasadena................Texas those oil refineries always did add an unusual smell to the air when I lived there

Unless you like to shoot shotgun, there isn't squat in the greater Houston area, and plan on traveling several hours, even the Gulf is a good way depending on what part of Houston you lived in......when I lived in that area, I lived in between Houston and Galveston - that meant I was about 1/2 hour away

Once you've been to Texas City everything else smells great haha.

I also live about 1/2 from the Gulf, but it only takes me less than 2 hours to get to Huntsville (which has some hunting areas).

Houston Area

There are all kinds of private and public shooting ranger and clubs in the houston area. Plenty of gun shops and big box stores to get whatever you need. The fishing is great both salt water and fresh, all you have to do is look around to find it. Al

Which has nothing on going through McKinney twice a day on 75--no one can merge in McKinney,a nd they all are only going from one on-ramp to the next exit, so, why bother going faster than 40, 35, maybe--hey, is that Clem's truck <waves> . . .

Houston is different than the metroplex. Down in Houston, if you see a car on an on-ramp, it's by itself, and it's accelerating, 50, 60, 70. Which is why that right lane is often empty in Houston, Beaudroix could be comin' like a rocket ship. Slow traffic keeps left in Houston.

In the metroplex, on-ramps will have 8, 10, 25 cars in a row, and they will slow down on the on-ramp (before looking for oncoming traffic). They will then creep out into the right lane. Now, there are people in the right (and #2 lanes) trying to exit, so, they have to slow down for the 3 dozen cars poking along at 20-25 off the on-ramp. So, both lanes will often come to a stop---and with the other two (or more) outer lanes still booking along at 60, 70 (80 if an expensive import car).

But, where ever you go, you can generally find a gunny. Wear the right sort of discrete pin on your lapel, and you even meet them at the Symphony, or the Museum of Art.

Houston has a very excellent Science museum, too.

Houston spans about 45 miles, Channelview to Katy; and about 45 miles League City to Conroe, plus or minus. Probably 40-50 distinct communities in the five county area, too. Which has another side benefit--there's just about a gun show every weekend down there. The bigger ones are Reliant (Houston Gun Collectors) and George R Brown (various promoters). But, Missouri City, Humble, Katy, all sorts of places host shows.

Houston is also one of those places, where, and hour or more away, it's all Houston. Inside the hour, and you have to specify, as Humble is very different than Cy-Fair or Woodway, or Spring Creek or the like.

Oh, it's wildflower season, so all the roadways are looking beautiful (TxDoT seeds hem every year). It's a bit less mild this year for "spring"--highs are near 80. But, it's good range weather, and there are a number of choices in the Houston metro area.

Oh north of the Metroplex is just bad, and coming into D/FW from the west can be bad as well.....Texas just has a lot of traffic....but what major cities don't right? ;)
