If you reload, you can really get the most out of the .257.
If you want a rifle to make yours with a bit of charactor, buy a rifle as a donor for the reciever, and re barrel it. 30-06 rifles are the most plentiful out there, and are usually the cheapest to pick up. The long action gives a little more space for longer bullets.
McGowan barrels will do one blued, threaded, and shipped for around $300. It just needs to be installed and final head spaced.
I've got 2 .257s, one a M700 and the other a M70. Very nice round, accurate, not much kick, does the job.
