I've got two boxes of .257 Roberts ammo...

Now thats my type of thinking. Get the ammo to justify another gun. Think I'll try that on my wife next time.
 
Good luck with that! Call er Shaw and have em make you one custom for the same cost as that silly ruger.

I used to pick up brass and even ammo for firearms that I did not own and then at some point I would end up owning a firearm in that caliber. Usually the caliber would fascinate me first. I dont suffer from that anymore no matter how good the deal as it has resulted in spending money that should have been saved. However a the .257 Roberts is a good caliber and if you have nothing else like it or close maybe there is justification for a good rifle.

ER Shaw is just a Savage with a 18 month wait. The Ruger will run less than half the price and looks and functions fine.
 
The real story is, I once had the rifle for that ammo. Friend of mine in the northeast...electrical engineer that did a lot of special missions in Asia, gave me a Ruger and an ART scope. I couldn't get the scope to mount and still be able to work the bolt. I planned on buying a new scope, but he was determined to mate those two together and insisted I send them back to him for some custom work (on his dime). When the rifle was ready he told me to come get it,' cause he didn't wanna ship it after putting so much into it and having it zeroed by some friends at some place called Quantico. Sadly, his health was poor and fading fast from all the mishaps he experienced in Asia and passed away before I could make the long drive to visit him. Great guy...generous guy (he did similar things for numerous friends).
One of those boxes of ammo were sent to me by him, thus I must find a rifle to go with the ammo just for him.

Edited to add: The rifle my friend gave me was a pre MkII 77. Would love to find another like it. Still have the manual for it here somewhere.

I think the pre-Mark II M77's were the Rugers that had the worst reputation for poor accuracy. You may want to find a Hawkeye M77 or a Mark II.

I have heard that. My friend quoted some pretty spectacular accuracy numbers for the rifle he gave me, but I suspect it had been tricked out a little. Some things he said made me think it had seen some action in 'Nam.

Your suggestion is good...gonna try finding a good used MKIi.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread but this comment is not entirely accurate. The Shaw Mk VII utilizes a modified Savage action but that's really all. The barrel and lug are different. RifleShooter magazine did a nice article on this rifle a month or two ago. They pointed out all the differences (and there were a bunch). But the coolest thing about the ER Shaw rifle to me is the cartridge selection. Sure it's a long wait but that's to be expected to some degree when you are having a custom rifle built. And I'll challenge anyone to find a custom rifle built by a reputable company for the price. Just my .02.

Sure the Shaw has its merits. But, for me, the merits just don't outweigh the wait and the fact that the finished rifle looks just like a Savage.

The trigger is a Savage Accu-Trigger as well.

Shaw barrels are excellent. I have two of them on a couple of custom Mauser's. Both are very accurate.

Ok - I'll stop the hi-jack there. Back to the .257 Bob. One of the guy's on my lease has a .257 Ackley Improved. Cool rifle.
 
If you reload, you can really get the most out of the .257.

If you want a rifle to make yours with a bit of charactor, buy a rifle as a donor for the reciever, and re barrel it. 30-06 rifles are the most plentiful out there, and are usually the cheapest to pick up. The long action gives a little more space for longer bullets.

McGowan barrels will do one blued, threaded, and shipped for around $300. It just needs to be installed and final head spaced.

I've got 2 .257s, one a M700 and the other a M70. Very nice round, accurate, not much kick, does the job.

Just to give another option. If you find a rifle in 250 Savage (aka 250-3000) you like you can have it rechambered by a gunsmith. That's how I got my 257 Roberts. The rechambering cost me $100 over the cost of the rifle.

This works because the dimensions of the 257 Roberts are the same or larger than those for the 250 Savage. So when the gunsmith uses the reamer the new chamber can be scraped out (technical term there!) to the proper shape.

Good Luck. I'm having fun reloading for and learning what's best for my 257 Roberts.

You see I say this because er shaw makes excellent barrels and ruger makes crappy barrels. done and done
 
HaHa, I told my wife that I found 25 rounds of 3" mag 12 gauge so I need a shotgun that shoots it; alas, no new shotgun for me :) Good luck with that!
 
Ever since the 25-06 became my favorite Cartridge; I've always wondered what it would be like to have a 257 Roberts. It's nearly as powerful from what I've read; and I think I've even heard of 257 Roberts +P; if I'm not mistaken; that would be cool ammo to try.

The box my friend sent me are Federal +P Vital Shok with 120 gr Partitions. While he was reworking the rifle I was browsing in a locally owned sporting good store and saw one lonely box of the same load sitting on the shelf. Asked the price... store owner said, "I've had that box for years and would dearly love to get rid of it." I think he charged me something like 18 bucks.

That's the rest of the story why I have two boxes of .257 Roberts ammo!
