Agree with the above. A Service Grade Garand is the most bang for your buck.

Just noticed you're in GA. Take a ride up the CMP store in Anniston Al, and pick it out yourself. Have them ship it home, it's cheaper than the sales tax!

While many of the Service Grades are extremely nice, if you want to be sure you will get a gun in new like condition, the CMP Springfield Armory Service Grade Special.

Service Grade is the best deal for the money

+1 for service grade. Thats what i picked up for 750 last year. My top choice rifle of all time

You might as well get one of those 625 dollar Garands before the CMP hoarders get them all.
I think it ought to be one rifle per applicant per lifetime. You get it, you learn to shoot it. You teach your kids how to shoot it, then when they are old enough they get one. Instead we've got hoarders with 8 or more safequeens in the basement ensuring the all-to-soon end of the supply of these rifles through this program.
When that happens those 625 dollar guns will be 900 dollar guns overnight.

rizbunk, that's the way it used to be, when the US Govt was in charge, and it was called the DCM (Dept of Civilian Marksmanship). You also had to go through a FBI background check, submit fingerprints, be a member of a club that actually shot service rifle competition,etc.

How long do you think the CMP (which is a non-government entity) would last under those restrictions? You do realize that all profits are used to fund youth shooting programs, don't you?

Plus, I would much rather see the US govt transfer all the available surplus guns to the CMP and have them all sold to the public. The alternative is that some desk jockey will have them cut up or melted down for scrap.
