There's currently a "Marlin/Glenfield model 60 parts kit--everything except the receiver" for auction on eBay. At the moment it's up to $177 and has 20 bidders. A new Marlin 60 is $167 (shipping included) at Bud's. For $10 less I can get an assembled parts kit including the receiver--IOW a complete rifle.

People can be amusing sometimes.
 
Still gotta have paperwork on the receiver, don't they?

Besides, I thought eBay had a policy about not selling any parts required for functionality (barrels, mags, etc) after the VA Tech shooter bought his Glock mags on eBay?

Eh, if they buy face to face from a private seller they probably don't need any paperwork.

I think Ebay changed their policies in the last few days - not sure exactly how.

So why not just buy the whole gun from a private seller?

The idea of using an online auction site and most likely a credit card to buy gun parts in order to avoid "paperwork" is a hilariously counterproductive solution to a simple problem.

This is just a case of auction fever.
 
I often see items selling on Ebay at higher prices than I can find locally. A deer stand with multiple bids that is available locally for $20 less. Add tax and you are the same price out the door AND you can return it if there is a problem.

I buy a lot on Ebay and have been generally pleased with the site. Paypal is a pain but I deal with it. It has now become just a storefront rather than an auction site.

My point is that it isn't much of a gun without a receiver. I've been going to gun shows for 20+ years and I have yet to see a bare Marlin 60 receiver for sale, leading me to believe that the only market for Marlin 60 parts is someone who already owns a receiver.

If you've had a gun accident that is so horrific that you need to replace EVERY part except the receiver then you are 1 in a million. And if you just need a bunch of spare parts for your existing gun then why not buy them with a stock and receiver attached (IOW a complete gun) for $10 less?

I just thought it was an amusing example of auction fever.
 
There's an M1917 Enfield "barrel" on ebay right now -- with receiver attached. Started at $99.99, no bids. Too bad it's been "bubba'ed" with the receiver ears ground off.
 
Have you folks never been to a live auction and watched what an item goes for when two bidders get in a bidding war. Price is not the object, winning is!

Yup, and its even better for the seller when alcohol is involved!

I always try to have mine end on a weekend at 0 drunk 30. :D
 
Ebay has relaxed their rules on what you can sell. They still won't allow hi cap mags but almost everything else has been cleared. No frames or receivers, of course. As for the guys who want the parts without the gun I'd imagine they have a frame already and want a certain part or parts for future. Parts kits go for big dollars depending on what it is. They are often from confiscated weapons where the frame was destroyed. Other times, if you have no use for an item, you can part it out, sell the parts separately then sell the frame at a later date for a good sum on a different auction site. You may be able to get more than $100 more for the same gun by selling it as parts instead of a whole gun.
 
eBay bucks promotion

People earn eBay bucks by buying items on eBay which expire after a period of time from being issued. They need to be used before they expire.
Since Ebay bucks are paid out about every 3 months, there's a lot of time for folks to build up the amount that they can collect as a form of rebate.
If someone has earned eBay bucks for their account, then they're not paying that full amount of their bid in cash. They will simply apply their ebay bucks as a form of partial payment.
In that way, bidding on eBay is subsidized by eBay's profits which they share with their buyers.
And there may be other forms of promotions that ebay offers in lieu of a full cash payment too such as coupon codes and earning double Ebay bucks during certain buying periods.

There are also people that may have two different guns that take the same parts and its worth it to them, if they are older and have sentimental value. I never try to guess whats in an auction bidders mind, its too scary sometimes.
 
I have 5 Model 60's in my closet

That's after 2 of my kids "Borrowed" others I cleaned up.

IMNSHO the Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 is one of the best bargains on the used gun rack that's out there.

They are easy to take down and clean and easier to repair. And they shoot better than they should.

I've paid from a high of $90 for a really clean newer Stainless model to $25 for an older (1972 long tube) "fixer upper" and then I sent it in to Marlin and they totally rebuilt the action on that one for only $25.

Why anyone would pay that kind of money for "parts" is beyond me. I can't imagine a criminal going to all that trouble and risk to get a .22 semi auto rifle as a crime gun.
 
My late 70's vintage Glenfield version was stolen about 20 years ago. It was the gun I learned marksmanship with and was capable of better accuracy than I am. My folks gave it to me as a birthday present when I was in high school.

I hope the guy who stole it is burning in Hell now.
 
Always makes you wonder when someone sells all of the parts to anything except for the ones that have the serial numbers.
