I just completed a Mossberg Armorers course and got to looking at an old shotgun I inherited from my Dad who inherited it from his boss. The shotgun is a New Haven model 600AB in 12 GA. I was looking at the New Haven and it appears to be made for them by Mossberg (Mossberg butt plate). It does not have a drop safety trigger group. The bolt assembly is slightly different from the Mossberg 500. The slide the bolt sets on is also different. It appears thought that I could get the appropriate Mossberg assemblies and give the gun an upgrade. Supposedly the New Haven model 600AB is the Mossberg 500. The way I figure I could save money by upgrading it instead of buying a whole new gun. Do any of you believe this can be done safely and relatively inexpensive?

First, see if it works with the present parts.

Mossberg 500s date back only to the 60s, not before the Spanish American War.

The new haven 600 is similar to the older 500s with one action bar, at least the ones I handled were. You CAN swap the cartridge interrupter for the the new type of interrupter if you want (actuated by the lifter, rather than by the bolt/slide), IIRC. At least the one I worked on you could. I don't know about swapping bolt/slides, etc.

I agree with Mr. McCracken, though. Nothing wrong with the 600 and it may be nicer/smoother than a new one. Plus after you end up buying all the newer parts you'll probably have spent as much as buying a whole 500. :)

Give it a good cleaning, a tiny bit o' lube here-n-there, then go out and have some bang-up fun with it.

You will probably find that the only thing it needs is shootin'.
