.41 Mag Association

I'm in. I have a 6" S&W 657, which is by far my favorite big bore to shoot, and a Ruger 4 5/8" Blackhawk. I had a 60s vintage 58 that I stupidly traded some years ago, so I'm looking to get one of the new ones S&W has in their classic line. Does anyone have one of these? How do they compare to the original?

RJM52, I've seen a lot of S&Ws over my lifetime but, no 5" first year, or any other year as far as that goes, model 57s? By the way diamond targets(Cokes) were long gone by the first year for .41 maggies.

IIRC Cokes were never issued on anything but "early" 57's and 29's.

...the 5" was made from a very poorly taken care of 6". The end of the barrel was so pitted it would have been unsightly to polish smooth. The smith was able to closely duplicate the barrel crown and reinstall the front sight base right down to drilling and pinning it to the barrel rib..

According to Doc44 over on the S&W Forums, S&W custom made one 5" nickel that he now owns. He said he saw a picture of a blue one many years ago but has not been able to document whether it was factory cut down.

As to the Cokes...Iggy is correct. Cokes came on 57s through 1965 or1966 I believe. The ones on the 6" are original to the gun as I bought the gun unfired from the original owner in 1990. The ones on the 4" were on a model 27 I bought just to get the grips...and then sold the gun with a correct set of service stocks for more than I paid for it with the Cokes... If you look at the ammo tests on the S&W Forums the grips on the 1980 vintage Model 57 are what came on the 1964 4" above...

ps...the Standard Catalog of S&W states that Cokes came on 29s and 57s till the late 1960s...

That one will probably push some people over the edge and order a FA...it is a real handy gun to carry...much smaller than a Ruger Flat Top .357...

Count me in too!! I have a 657 (hence my handle) "Classic Hunter" model and a RBH with a 6 1/2 in barrel. The Smith is my all time favorite, and has taken a few deer here in Wi. The Ruger is my back up. I'm looking to get more, but they are hard to find. I've been reloading for several years and just started casting last winter...lot's of fun.

RJM52, You are my hero...

Is the Desert Eagle hard on brass? I've heard it chews up the brass on the way to throwing it all over the range.

BP..no, have not noticed any dinging of the brass at all. The only problem occasionally encountered is a failure to extract. The .41 uses the same bolthead as the .44 so sometimes the extractor will slip.

Yeh, I know, but some of those stories just kinda need to ride off into the sunset.
Might be best if me and it went together.
Some folks have some funny notions about things, don'tchaknow......

I only mention it because in spite of what some say the ol .41 magnum M&P is one hell of a gun and the cartridge does it's job just like it was designed to do.

This weekend I decided to shoot my Desert Eagle .41 Magnum at the last match of the season for our local USPSA club. I had a few failure to extract during the match, but it still is a hoot to shoot. That is me starting at 3:17 and 5:07 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzIeGlBondU As you can see in the video, taking the off the safety and releasing the magazine are both two handed operations.

Added a 3 inch Taurus 425, 2.5 inch Taurus 415 and another Marlin 1894 CCL to my .41 Magnum collection recently.
