Interesting that the mainstream media is viewing Gun Control and potential AWB as a non-issue.
 
Not much demand from voters in 1990s. Just not a lot of opposition.
The old divide and conquer routine. The type of firearms targeted were rare back then, so not enough people stood up against something they didn't feel would result in them losing something.

Playing to the selfishness of the population by subdividing people they want to further restrict.

When they want to restrict handguns they don't take on all handgun owners, even though they would like them all restricted, they have to work up to that. Instead they divide them into inexpensive handguns, saturday night specials, junk handguns, unsafe handguns (none were really unsafe other than perhaps being unreliable or the manufacturer would have been liable for the defective product and went out of business.)

Same deal with rifles and shotguns.


However things like AR-15s are so popular today, subdividing such owners to pit them against eachother would be very difficult.

The recent AWB blooper on the debates was rhetoric designed to fill the void left by an ignorant question with something that appeared to have substance. The general public, aside from people like the woman who asked the question, do not support an AWB, and this is common knowledge. Even among Antis, who as far as I know are not gearing up for a push on an AWB based on what the pres. or his opponent said.
People are getting worked up over nothing,
and people that are playing politics with it are getting worked up against the opposition without realizing that their boy is in the same camp.

I'm not surprised - Businessweek hires quality writers, and Paul Barrett is no exception. I've been impressed by his Businessweek stories on Glock, and then his recent book about that particular gun and the company that makes it.

I've met him, and shot with him, and I think he's a man of personal and journalistic integrity that believes in seeing both sides of an issue as best he can.
