Taught another one to shoot

Good work! I always enjoy stories of new shooters, especially women!

The feel good of teaching newbies never stops!

I just did a basic handgun safety class for my church. There were four women out of six people. I love teaching women how to shoot as well.

I taught a co-worker's 8yo to shoot a few weekends ago. He didn't like the 17HMR (too loud?!) but he loved the 22's. Of course we talked lots of safety.




When I'm at the public range, a lot of times there will be a husband/bf with his wife/gf and he'll try to start her shooting a Glock .40, then she will freak out at the noise and recoil and not want to touch the gun. I almost always go over and offer to let the gf/wife shoot one of my .22 pistols and more often than not, they take the offer up, get their confidence with the .22, and are able to move back to whatever gun the bf/husband brought.

I'm a firm advocate that .22's are the way to start a shooter, be it pistol or rifle. Add noise and recoil once they've mastered the basics of stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger control.

I couldn't agree more. I have tried this method several times with new shooters and they take to centerfires much easier after using a rimfire.

I recently took my 35 year old niece for her second shooting experience. Her first was with her fiance, and they shot his Beretta in .40 S&W. She liked it because she was with him, and it was his gun.

She and I went to my local club and shot a Ruger SR-22 and my Buckmark. She had fun with the Ruger, then settled right down and fell in love with the Buckmark. This Buckmark is easy to love, nice short/light TacSol barrel and a FastFire. She was a great student, and within 20 minutes she was shooting 50 ft 1" groups from a rest. At the end of an hour she was shooting 3" offhand groups and grinning from ear to ear.

That evening her fiance wanted to know exactly what gun she was shooting and where could he get one?

Gotta start out on .22, I think.

Nice! I actually have plans to take a girl to the range this evening. She grew up with a Dad that hunts and has never shot a firearm before.

I work in a computer lab at a major university,,,
I am constantly taking young men and women shooting,,,
It's the best pro-active strategy we RKBA'ers could ever adopt.

Problem aarond is that many "new shooters" that we bring aren't converted antis, but rather people who are pro-RKBA but just don't own them themselves.

So did I. I teach a lot of folks actually. Typically friends, girlfriends, friends wives, etc.

I have a female friend now who is just waking up in her late 30s to the situation we are in nationally. She is getting more in tune with survival and such and the dark days to certainly come. She is slowly converting...

More like "neutrals" moved to "positives". I've also moved many "antis" to neutral or positive.

It's all a step in the right direction.

I tried teaching my wife to shoot with a .22, and she hated it. She just wanted to shoot my 9mm's. But I'm thinking she is the rare exception. She surprised the hell out of me both with marksmanship and safety our first time out, I was very proud.

My younger brother has also recently shown interest in learning to shoot, and obtaining his CPL, so we're heading to the range sometime soon.

It's fun to teach new shooters, and obviously great for our culture.

Nice job OP (hso)! We need more women in the sport...much more.

I'm taking my wife to a range for some rental time with a .38 special. I let her fire my XD-S .45acp, and she was shocked at the recoil. Didn't stop her from shooting a 9mm or .22 handguns same outing, however.
