first rifle range outing

Took my new to me marlin model 60 to the range. I bought it from a pawn shop so mostly it was to make sure the 40 year old gun worked. Turns out it was 100% reliable with bulk blazer ammo ( which is relieving even tho the shop gurantees its guns).

I was using a scope I was told was original to the gun. It was only 4x pwr. I was easily shootinng through the same hole at 15 yards, but out to 50 I was having trouble seeing the target well enough. What kind of accuracy should I expect at 50 to 100 yards?

Also my offhand shooting is awful, any tips? Eventually I want to get to appleseed rifleman skill.

Somewhere between sub-par and poor.

Have you gone to an Appleseed yet?
 
I think a sling is on my first to do, but I need to install sling mounts first.

No I haven't been to an Appleseed event yet but I have heard much about it and want to be ready for one. I'm not sure my rifle would actually meet the demands (as far as being able to reload fast enough) but I want to practice the stances and aiming at least.

Reloading time won't be an issue. Plenty of that model rifle at Appleseeds.

Do you know how to make/use a loop sling or hasty sling?
 
Between bench and off hand shooting there is a position known as standing. Learning this position really helped my off hand shooting. I found that shoulder alignment is key.

...what is the difference between off hand and standing?
 
With a better scope, it should shoot good enough at 50 with cheap ammo to put 9 outta 10 rounds in the end of a beer can. At 100 yards, it outta hit that beer can about 9 outta ten times....Sorry, this isn't a scientific measurement, but I consider a Model 60 to be a minute o' beer can plinker and a good one at that.

As far a Blazer goes, I don't think it is all that bad for a budget ammo. My CZ's will put 10 a 1" or so group at 50 yards.
 
Off a bench with my mod 60 and bulk Win Speer lead up ammo with a 3 x 9 can easily shoot half moa consistently, and I have a thread hear showing moa at 100 yards. I was dares by a the member to prove it, and did.
Clean it good. You have to take it apart go to rimfirecentral.com for how to do that, and try different ammo. Like I said mine likes uncoated lead 36 grain hollow points.


I search out this ammo so I will always have at least 2000 rounds on hand. Only ammo my mod 60 gets feed. Congrats on the new 60. They are a fine rifle.
 
The best 5 round group I've gotten from my 23 year old model 60 is basically one ragged hole easily covered by a dime. This is from a bench at a bit over 50 yards using CCI SV ammo. This year I did put an MCARBO spring kit in it, took off my old 4x and put on a 3-9x40 Sweet. .22 scope and put it in a boyd's thumb hole stock. No, I can't do it consistently but I do keep sub minute of beer can groups...
 
I have an idea about the hasty sling but I'm always open to more instruction. I gotta put sling mounts on it first though.

At an Appleseed you will be taught how to use a hasty sling for the standing position and a loop sling for kneeling/sitting, and prone.

Sling mounts and a USGI web sling preferred.
