I overheard the following conversation in Austin, Texas. One of the participants responses specifically annoyed the heck out of me.

Person A: So my brother got shot....

Person B: That's horrible, is he okay?

Person A: Yah, the doctor says he'll be fine within the year, and at least he got the guys...

Person B: Got them, you mean he was able to identify them or something?

Person A: No, my brother carries a gun, he shot them both, got one in the skull. They came after him as he was closing up his restaurant.

Person B: Your brother carries a gun, what is he, in the mafia or something?!:cuss:

Person A: No he has a license...

Person B: Weird...

The underline portion is the image we gun owners must combat. Many people see carrying a gun as a sign that one is involved in criminal activity when this is so untrue...
 
Maybe if Texas would stop being afraid of seeing people carrying a handgun, and legalize open carry, there wouldn't be so many people who think nobody carries a gun unless they are a cop or a criminal

Well, you got it half right...Austin is the Berkeley of Texas.

When we get the Border Fence completed, we start building the fence around Austin...not to keep the sane people out, but to keep the moonbats isolated.
 
Careful with the insults or this thread will be closed. So Person B's problem with this whole situation wasn't that two guys shot at Person A's brother, it was the the brother was carrying a gun (and proved it can save your life)? I know anti-gunners don't think logically, but sheesh.
 
So, did you comment to say, "I have a license to carry a gun in Texas. So do many of my friends. Somewhere around XXX thousands of Texans have licenses to carry a gun. Doesn't sound strange to me they eventually confronted someone who did . . . "


Or did you stay silent?

As the most liberal area of Texas, they most definitely are a different species. Heck, when Texas filed the petition to secede, it was Austin residents that were kissing up and asking to be kept part of the Union and no longer a part of Texas....

You know what, y'all can take 'em, us Texans don't need 'em...

I grew up in Austin. I would say the "weirdness" started with the hippies around the time I was going to UT, in the 1960's. Before that, not so much. And even in the 60's, the hippies were a distinct minority on that campus.

Still, comparatively speaking, Austin is not a particularly crime-laden or dangerous place. I don't think I would feel the need to carry a gun there routinely. Maybe it might be a good idea for a person, say, who had a job closing up a restaurant late at night. (I used to have jobs closing up restaurants and convenience stores when I was in college. I never liked those kinds of jobs, but the threat of robbery wasn't one of my concerns.)
 
Hey... hey... slow down with the Austin bashing... I don't live there but many members of my family do.

Anyway, I only put the location up because I was astonished a Texan wouldn't at least be aware that carrying a gun is legal in their state.
 
The OP put up a real conversation. We need to have a logical discussion to determine sound answers to educate and enlighten "B" type people.
 
It is ignorance, but if somebody didn't grow up with guns or has friends who are really into guns I don't find that attitude particularly surprising. I have family members in MD and they were shocked to learn that I carry a gun everywhere I go, legally of course.

Great time to educate.

There were about 235,000,000 Americans over 18 and about 6 million concealed carry licenses in the US in March of 2012. That's just over 2% of the population with a CHL.

The facts are that 98 out of 100 Americans don't even think about carrying a gun, and will never need one in their lifetime as long as they're not involved in any questionable activities (drugs, etc). The vast majority of cops will never use their firearm except at the range over their career (I believe the percentage who actually use their firearms in a duty situation is much less than 1%), and they get sent out looking for trouble.

The general population has no reason to see carrying a gun as a common behavior.

Just because somebody doesn't have a license that doesn't mean they "don't even think about carrying a gun"

Lots of Americans live in a state where they can carry a handgun in their car without a license (which they do, so they don't get a license), or where they can carry a handgun openly without a license (again, which they do, therefore they don't get a license). Also, just because a person does not have a carry license that doesn't mean they have never even thought about it.
 
That is classic. The person has all the evidence of "why he needs a gun" provided to him in the story...yet he can't see it.

"Person B" is clearly not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
