Out running around today and stopped in a pawn shop to look at what they might have. They had just put out a ruger bearcat and after they told me I could have it for $275 out the door I bought it.
A true 95% revolver with ser # 50XX and what I think makes it from 1961. I have always wanted a clean earlier one for a fair price and this one makes me happy.

Glad you found what you wanted; they are neat little guns.

Jim

no it has not been converted. I have a friend who needed a set of grips his blackhawk that he bought new in 1956 and is like 95%plus and ruger would not sale me original grips without sending it in for conversion. We found a nice set this last weekend at a show for his one broken grip panel.

Nice score!

Ruger always asks for the serial number on an Old Model and they won't sell parts for those that have not been converted but they are available elsewhere. However, they don't have grips for the old XR3 anyway so your only option was to find some used originals.

they took my number and called me back the next day and told me they had the black grips with the silver logo for the 1956 gun but would not sell them to me without sending the revolver in. I have no complaints as they usually are very helpfull.

The grips were given as a gift to the person who needed them. it is nice to help someone. he was on 2 ships that went down at guadalcanal and then spent a few weeks on the island with the marines.

You did a very good deed for a good sailor, give him my thanks for his service, spending that much time with those jarheads must have been hell ! lol

Why would you not want to send in the revolver for conversion? They do the work free, it improves safety and they return the original parts to you with the gun! Because they give you the original parts there's no reason not to send them the gun...

ArchAngel: It is my understanding that they also mark the frame when they do the conversion. Collectors find this not to their liking.

I didn't know they marked the frame, do they really?

I would think the collector value would be effected on an unfired gun, not one that's already shot and in only 95% condition. I would worry more about safety if I were buying this gun as a shooter.

And when you get the converted gun back the old "dangerous" crisp trigger is turned into a POS!:fire:
Of course you can put the old parts back in but I have found it is not so simple a task.:cuss:

Would you send a '65 Ford Mustang back to the factory to add air bags??

Just because it is "safer" doesn't mean better!

The safety issue is not with the firearm but the user. Just carry it on an empty chamber and you have no problems what-so-ever.

Guys, I wasn't arguing with anyone's choices, I was just wondering. I completely understand wanting to keep a firearm original. I like the older Marlin leverguns from before they added that ugly safety. I see nothing wrong with the half-cock safety...
