I've been turkey hunting for about 22 years now, and this is my first turkey. I shot one with a .30-06 once (while deer hunting), but could never find it after it flew away (know I hit hit though). I've shot at maybe 2 or 3 more, but the underbrush was too thick...and after that I have passed up numerous shots.

I go in the spring, and during the fall, I mostly look for them while deer hunting. I was deer hunting today and was loaded with #1 buckshot. About 10 minutes after I sat down I heard the tell tale LOUD noises of turkey flying through the woods, and about 15 of them lit in the trees around me. The closest one to me was in a tree about 30 yards away and he was about 70 feet up in the tree. About 5 minutes after he lit in the tree I hear dogs well up the creek from me, and then I hear crashing of leaves. About 100 yards away from me a group of at least 20 turkeys were running at full speed through the woods....so now I have seen about 35-40 turkeys in 8 minutes. I started making clucking noises (with my mouth) and the one in the tree closest to me flies out of his tree to within maybe 20 yards of me. 1 shot and he was down. I am sure that was enough, but he flopped a few times, and I like to make the kill quick, so I went ahead and shot again.

When he was way up in the tree...I could have sworn he had a nice 5-7 inch beard (both sexes are legal to shoot in fall). After I got to him though, I saw no beard and concluded it was a hen...until I saw the snood and the tail feathers. Then I found his beard...maybe 2.5-3 inches. His spurs were just bumps at this point. I estimated he weighed about 15-18 pounds. My home scale with is not very accurate said 14lb.....so I am sticking with around 15 pounds.

I'll be grinning when I shoot my first turkey. I've hunted them but haven't even laid eyes on a wild turkey in my entire life. Good job.

dude! - first turkey! You ought to be smiling... congrats... (I'm still workin' on my first one...)

My dad took the pictures....he takes forever to frame up a shot and didn't exactly tell me when he was about to take it

Where do you live? They are pretty common in Central Virginia. I have actually seen them in my fairly populated neighborhood before.

every time I sit in my deer stand turkeys out the wazoo come along and eat my corn, overrun with them....nuisance, I got to get out of my stand and run em off.....wouldnt waste time on them, tougher than leather to eat.

Every turkey I shot with a rifle (2 total) blew apart and were total garbage afterwards. High speed expanding center-fire rifle cartridges are not the preferred turkey medicine. ;)

Excellent! I've shot ONE in my lifetime, during spring season when I was in a hunting club and they had a good ranch. All private in Texas, hard to get a lease and I don't pay the prices they want for day hunting 'em. If I hunt 'em again, it'll be with a .22 mag and solids. I do have good selections in shotguns, just prefer rifles and they're legal on Rio Grandes in Texas.

I was deer hunting, but turkey were in season and I saw this one about 100 yards away. I think the big problem was that there was no resistance...and the bullet passed right through without doing much damage. He flew off into some really thick pines and I chased him for an hour, but never could catch up to him...I heard him flying away when I got to within 20 yards of him. Eventually night time stopped the tracking.

I've actually thought about hunting them with a rifle in spring (it is legal in Virginia) going for a head shot in the 30 yard range. There is a poster on here who is pretty successful with a .22 Hornet on turkey

HOOfan,

If you can legally use military ball ammo in Va., it will do the trick IF you hit him in the vitals or break his neck/back. The expanding ammo will blow them up if you hit something solid or pass through a place of little resistance and let them go off and die somewhere in the woods. .22 magnums are very good medicine if legal.

In Virginia even air rifles are legal for Turkey. I would more likely go .22 Magnum, .22 Hornet, .222, .223 or 17 HMR though.
