Seems the Kansas Fish & game commission is running out of money.
SO, they are going to start charging for senior citizen hunting & fishing license’s again.

http://www.kshb.com/dpp/lifestyle/free-outdoor-licenses-for-kansas-seniors-to-end

Just after I got old enough to stop buying them after doing it every year my whole life too.

It's not that I can't afford it.
I have continued to buy them every year after I turned 64 anyway, just to help support F&G wildlife conservation.

What frosts my cookies is the F&G Dept. has managed to build a big surplus in the treasury several times through the last 40 years.

And every time they get a little ahead?
The House & Senate take it away from them and spend it on social welfare, or a new statue & leather chairs for the state house!!

in LA they charge $5 for a hunting and fishing license for those 60 and over. you can purchase a lifetime over 60 license for $50. the reason the fish and game depts. charge is because the Federal funding from hunting and fishing gear and ammo taxes comes back to the state based on how many licenses they sell. not how much they cost.

so the KS dept is just trying to get there share! don't feel bad the legislature steals our conservation dollars in LA also!

Bull

Ohio did something similar a dozen or so years ago. My dad missed the free license by six months and a few days. I heard just about the same overall feel from him as I'm reading from you now.

Well.. F&G, DNR, whatever it's called, is part of gubmint, and as I'm seeing it, most leec...I mean Americans must like it that way?

NO SYMPATHY!!!!!!!!! The old people in this country, in general and particullarly (and certainly with exceptions), have many, many blessings. I wish they would give the "senior discount" to the young guy with the wife and kids trying to raise a family. That's who really needs the break!

I have great respect for the elderly as individuals, but I don't see how they should constitute a perceived voting block or a protected group, whether it's for firearms-reated activities or anything else.

My widowed mother is 81. She worked her patooty off all her life and deserves respect. She has a much-needed handicapped parking permit. She gets early boarding on planes. Having taken her retirement in a lump sum to pay for house renovations and repairs, she's on Social Security as her only source of income.

She sometimes allows a merchant to apply the senior discount to her purchase because making a fuss gets her nowhere. But she never asks for it.

I respect that.

Florida's FWC suggested it but backed off quickly..........sorta like they did when they suggested they'd like a shoot that pussycat on sight suggestion implimented!...........Lotta backstroking on that last after the PETA folks got on their backside!

Really tho, I wouldn't mind paying the same old fee every year IF, and that's in super caps, IF we had a GFC that was worth a damn......watch our meetings on the PBS channels and it truly comes off as " aren't we sweet, and don't we do a great job". Management in the Florida model truly consists of doing what the staff tells 'em to do and an absurd amount of recognition for past chairmen and directors! All the while this agency does not even begin to manage the deer/bear/predator issues plaguing us.

Wait until you get older and I guarantee you'll be singing a different tune.

AND the FWC is purely political. Biology never seems to enter into any decision .. only politics and $$$.

I know I was sure ticked when Fla. and Ga. stopped their reciprocal agreement for seniors the very year I became eligible.

For you younger guys - We oldsters don't present much competition to YOUR animals. We can't go all day, stay up all night and hunt again. Every third morning is about tops for me.

Dr Sandman, Do you think for one minute any one of us hasn't already gone through what you complaining about with having to raise our families? Our Senior Citizens have already been there and done that and paid their dues.

Your lack of respect is upsetting.

As with any group, catering to the entire group means that some who don't deserve the break get it anyway.

Some Olde Pharts' retirement incomes have been clobbered by stupid government money-handling--which means junky interest rates, and savers are in deep doo-doo. So, those "Senior Citizens" need every break they get.

I'm not in the $400,000 Bluebird RV crowd, but I don't need the discounts. I don't ever ask for them, either.

What's sad is to be at my FFL buddy's shop and some Olde Phart comes in with a rifle or shotgun to sell. "Well, I can't really afford to go hunting any more, and I kinda need the money..."

The middle class' buying power has been in decline for over forty years. Now they're getting older--and even "real old". Government oughta give 'em a break, as hard as it's been screwing them. At the same time, the middle class has been the mainstay of the business end of hunting--which bodes ill for the future

The reality deal, though, is that you're supposed to hustle hard enough and smart enough so that you don't have to care about other people's breaks. Make your own billfold fat enough so you don't give a rat's patoot about what others do or don't do. After all, the discount on that hunting license is about the cost of a steak at Ruth's Chris--so why care?
