As I have slowly amassed the tools/toys for 3gun or tactical rifle matches in this upcoming year, I find myself today wondering how these matches will run with what seems to me to be a shortage of ammunition?

Maybe we'll all be shooting these things with Ruger 10-22's and "hot lips" magazines!

I think most people that compete have a tendency to be pretty well stocked up, unless they're just getting into the sport. It may cut back on their training but who knows.

I also believe that most of the shooters who shoot any competition tend to "roll their own" so I would think getting into reloading would be in order.

I never worried about ammunition shortages as I always keep enough components around to load for my life on the planet (or close in case I live long).

I just did yesterday. I went out to my shop and opened the drawer. There were about 4,000 (small rifle). My friend that I deer hunt with has over 10k (just small rifle). He has well over 20k total. I'm a slacker and only have maybe 13k total. Cabelas had a sale about a year ago. CCI's were $19/k. We each got 7k to make the minimum dollar amount so we could an additional $20 off coupon.

FWIW....I have over 1k of just pure lead to pour my own bullets.

Guys that are screaming about ammo shortages are the same people that want to buy a life jacket when the ship is already sinking.

Has either of you attempted to locate small rifle primers here lately?
Last show I went to here in Ohio was the Summit County Fairgrounds show about 3 weeks ago and there were plenty at normal reasonable prices. I didn't buy any as I have plenty. Hell, if I get below around 10K and I am out and about I get some. I don't always have to "need" them.

I like that and find it to be true. Everyone is freaking out over magazines like AR type mags right now. If I am walking a show and see mags at a good price I always snag a few in passing. I don't wait till something happens and look at $50 magazines that sell normally for $10.

Gander Mountain here had small rifle primers yesterday, and online places had plenty of quality .223 ammo as of Friday. I ordered another case of Black Hills 52 gr. Match Hollowpoint from Midway and it was in stock and has shipped already.

Glad you guys stocked up like that!

BTW, have you checked your local fire code to see if you are in compliance with all those primers?

That's my issue. I have what, 40 pound or more of powder in the powder magazine, but only maybe 15k primers and only maybe, what, 10k .mil 308 cases and perhaps 5k 223 empties.

Guess I'll have to dip into the emergency backup strategic reserves. Just that any time I use something from the reserves, I like to be able to replace it in case of bona fide emergency.

Anybody know how long primers last? Some of these are 1995 era. Guess I'll use these first.

I will reduce training and attend fewer matches for a while. I have a nice inventory, but i want to see how store inventories look before i blow thru a thousand rounds. I will also attend more 22 matches like Steel Challenge and rimfire rifle matches. This saturday my range is having a practical rifle match with centerfire and rimfire squads. I will run my M&P15-22.

Spread them around with friends and family. That way you can keep more stocked. 10K here, 10K there....Everyone's happy.
