The new VEPR 12ga shotgun is one of the most exciting new products I've seen in 2012. The VEPR 12ga is not a Saiga by another name, it's a totally different shotgun that has some important improvements. If you're into 3 Gun shooting, you might want to seriously consider this shotgun.

I know things are crazy right now with panic buying. Hopefully we can defeat the pending AWB in Congress and prices and availability will return to normal later in 2013.

I will say one thing for the fugly AK Saiga with short mag it makes pretty good bird gun. The handling is actually very good. I suspect trying to lay hands on VEPR now is like trying to ride a unicorn.

You can't find VEPR's or Saiga's right now. The Saiga has been on the ATF "must ban soon" list since SHOT Show of 2012. At that time they were asking the community to comment on their proposed plan of banning their import. Of course it didn't happen... I'm not sure what stars aligned to prevent the ATF from banning them, but we dodged that proverbial bullet. But the panic buy for Saiga's was on and continued for months.

We just started to see things settling down and Saiga's weren't disappearing as quickly as they were sat out on the rack. Of course it could be that the $699 price tags was a bit much for most buyers given they were $400 shotguns before the panic started.

Now you'll find neither of them around... and the prices for both have spiked considerably.

All we can do is join the NRA and write letters like crazy to your elected officials. Now isn't the time to sit idly by and let others fight for you (I'm not saying you are by the way). People need to take up the pen and join the fight.

It got blocked by a rider on a must-pass budget bill. It forbade them from using any money to change the importability of shotguns via the sporting purposes clause.
