Well, another vendor has joined the ranks of those that fail to completely honor the Second Amendment.

Dana Safety Supply has stated that they will no longer sell self loading rifles to civilians and will reserve those rifles for sale only to law enforcement agencies.

According to numerous reader reports Dana Safety Supply has issued the following statement which suspends their sale of semi automatic rifles to civilians.

This would put Dana in the company of several other companies who have adopted the same policy in recent days.

Well hey, at least they have their law enforcement sales to keep them in business, right?

Wait, not so fast?

One Sheriff in Oconee County, GA begs to differ. Sheriff Scott Barry tells us:

Well, I have done business in the past with DSS and found them to be an excellent source of products that we buy…however, I just sent them this email

Sirs,
It is my understanding that you have stopped selling self loading rifles to members of the general public in favor of selling them to law enforcement officers only.
I deeply regret that decision. As such, this agency will no longer seek bids from or purchase from DSS.
Thank you for your time and attention to this email.

Good for Sheriff Berry!!!!!!

I like it when LEOs do something positive to stand by the civilians whom they're sworn to protect. I've always respected police for their willingness to do a job that involves a great deal of really unpleasant nonsense -- to say nothing of the dangers involved.

As for the store, I hope they get smart real soon. I would urge everyone in their vicinity to search elsewhere -- even if it's a Wal Mart or other big box store.
Semiauto rifles have been around 100 years.
The brouhaha over guns is getting absurd. Police asked to leave at a Denny's....proposed bans that do nothing.... now this.

That's ridiculous.

I would point out however that your title says not selling to civilians when in fact they are still selling to law enforcement which is still civilian.

Ryanxia, in terms of firearms, there's military, LEO, and civilian sales. Some things are open to LEO that aren't to civilians.

Companies that do this make me sick, and I'm glad for this sheriff. I think its hilarious when a company neuters itself by limited the scope of potential customers on purpose.

Just to clarify terms, remember dictionary's? My Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary defines "Civilian" as one not on active duty in a military, police, or fire fighting force.

Cane I'll certainly agree that dictionaries are useful. Look up how the letter s pluralizes a word without preceding it with an apostrophe.

Can you provide some examples? I hadn't given this much thought, but I'm racking my brain and unable to come up with anything.

In some states LEOs can buy a taser where a normal citizen can't, can buy stronger pepper spray and, of course, the agencies can buy fully automatic weapons.

Sheriff Berry is in my neighboring county. Strait up good guy. I wish I lived where I could vote for him.

Psyopspec, there is the obvious NFA that most companies advertise specifically to LEO/military. Go to the page of some brands that makes a lot of military weapons (HK and FN, for example) and you'll find the "civilian" section and the "military/LEO" section. Keep in mind that civilians can't legally buy a SMG/assault rifle made after 1986, so maybe that's not the fault of the manufacturer. Smaller companies will have the NFA items available with "standard NFA restrictions apply".

To further the issue, try to buy a NIB FNS with no manual safety as a civilian. I recall that one user on (may have been this) forum sent a letter/email asking why that model was not available to civilians, and it basically boiled down to "because you suck, and we hate you." I know it's an HK meme, but I had to use it for FN. They basically said civilians can't be trusted without a safety, but that it's low profile so if you don't want to use it you don't have to.

I know it's a small example, but it is an example of a company (and a major company at that) refusing to sell a certain model of weapon to civilians even though it is completely legal. Of course, it means that instead of getting a FNS with no manual safety, I bought a M&P with no manual safety, so that's FN's loss.

can someone tell me whats with all the hullabaloo over "semi-automatic" weapons currently?

is it because the CT shooter used a semi-automatic firearm? hell, just about every shooting for the last century has been a semi-auto, why is it just now everyone got their knickers in a bunch?

Is it possible this may be a little less caustic than it seems? Is it possible DSS suspended sales to civilians to ensure an adequate supply of duty rifles to an incoming class of LEO's? I mean that literally, I don't know, the letter doesn't give many details. Could DSS be running so low on patrol quality rifles and gear that it has suspended sales in order to preserve stock on hand in order to provide public safety officers a chance to buy one?

It's possible, however unlikely Jakk. If it were to conserve the existing stock for LEO, they should have mentioned it was due to the fact that they have a limitted supply they need to ration to police. Without mentioning that fact, it makes it look like they're joining the ranks of companies that are jumping on the "reasonable" bandwagon. Whether intentional or PR blunder, it looks bad for the company and I would be behind the Sheriff 100% if I lived there.

How does that old saying go?
"Just because I am paranoid does not mean they are not out to get me!"

Actually, if people were actually out to get you then you wouldn't be definition be paranoid.

But no, the UN is not out to get us.

I would be making my feelings know on the face book pages of every business they own.

Most businesses have a YELP page as well where you can rate the business and write a review.
Makes sense to give other people the heads up.

Hurray for my home town (county) sheriff!

Scott Barry has been the sheriff in Oconee since I was very young, and has a great reputation with the residents. Its great to see some LEOs standing up for our rights. All too often, the only LEO voices we hear on gun control issues are the ones trumpeted on the news questioning why civilians need such "assault weapons", and claiming that our rights compromise their officer's safety.

p.s. - With Clyde Armory right down the road, I think Sheriff Barry will have no problem procuring top equipment for his department.

I don't remember saying I was paranoid. I believe I quoted a common saying from the 60's hippie culture.

Is it possible DSS suspended sales to civilians to ensure an adequate supply of duty rifles to an incoming class of LEO's?

Absolutely not. The SC store is just down the road from my house and I used to work for the previous corporate owner. The parent company is not gun friendly at all and forbids the employees from carrying or possessing firearms on company property.

There are better choices and places to shop.
