Breaking news: Attempted gun burglary tied to journal news gun maps

Brewster, N.Y. – 1/13/2013 – Today Senator Greg Ball (Patterson – R, C, I) announced that a burglary has been reported on Davis Ave. in White Plains, New York that evidently ties into The Journal News gun maps. It is reported that the burglar used The Journal News’ interactive gun map to target a home included on the map. Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt.

There are two classes of "outted" permit holders who are really peeved:
o jail guards in the counties covered by Journal News are getting calls at home by inmates who now know where they live, and
o women under death threat who have moved and gotten pistol permits are afraid their stalkers are just a mouse click away.

In addition to Senator Ball’s legislation, the Vice President of the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County, Robert Buckley, said in a letter, publishing these maps online is jeopardizing the safety of residents and is irresponsible.

“The Affiliated Police Association of Westchester County Inc. is putting The Journal News on notice that we will hold [them] accountable for any incident where any of our over 25,000 members are involved with an incident where a criminal or ex-con presents themselves at the residence of one of our members as a result of their name being made public by [their] newspaper,” said Buckley.

Ok, picked up by a few other news outlets, going by what the locals have been saying and from other news articles

2 men broke into the home while the homeowner was away. One in custody. They apparently tried to break into the gun owners safe, nothing else disturbed.
 
And that's just one they caught. For every one there will be dozens more that get away with it...

Not sure a lawsuit would work here if this is legit. Freedom of information protects this.



Now you can make laws to prevent this, but it's already too late in the case here.



What's ironic is the newspaper who printed this only wanted to "out" gun owners but in fact endangered potential gun owners and non-gun owners.



The reason is is that burglars will target people whom they believe to have guns if they are looking to steal guns and they will target people they believe to be non-gun owners for an easy burglary.

I have no problem with the release of that information. First amendment, you see.

I have a problem that the data was collected and stored in the first place.
 
This had already happened in Ohio:

When CCW passed several years, both Cleveland Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal ahhhhhhh 'newspapers' published lists of CCW permit holders.

A couple of "miscreants" in Akron admitted planning crimes by checking out intended victims in the CCW list, Cleveland Crooks used it as a guide to homes for break-ins

Not sure if this is the same article but it says they also stole a safe containing guns, cash and other valuables.

Can you really sue and win on these?

Doesn't the freedom of information act protect them from lawsuits?

I am not sure that Freedom of Information necessarily applies. The information was already public record, much like tax records are in all or most states. Your neighbors can look up the taxed value of your house online in most major areas anyway. Robbers could as well. Where not online, the information can be accessed at tax offices, usually on a county or city basis.

Two handguns and two pistol permits were stolen from the New City home of a man whose name and address are listed on the website of a local newspaper as possessing gun permits, police said.

The thieves ransacked the house Wednesday night, breaking into two safes on the home's third floor and stealing a third safe. The guns were in the stolen safe, police said.
