I've spent the last 90 minutes or so on G/B cruising the C & R stuff, and all I can say is Wow!, prices are way up....at least 35% from just last September. Minimum. But tomorrow morning I can at least look at Mrs. Mariachi with a straight face and tell her that our little gun collection has increased in value eight/ten times more than her retirement fund did last year.......:D
 
Hah, I was just thinking the same thing. I'm an equities trader, and my best "investment" so far in 2013 has been my own firearms collection.

What originally drew you to the Whitney? I'd never heard of the company, let alone this particular firearm, until I saw this thread.

ETA: I had a little time, so for some quick and very casual reading, here are links to the lead designer and the firearm.

Rober Hillberg worked for Pratt and Whitney. My guess is this may have had something to do with the name. It sounds like he was quite an engineer.

The Whitney Wolverine was only manufactured for a 2 year period from 1956-58. At that time, the MSRP of a NIB pistol like the one above was $45. According to company records, only 500 of the nickel plates versions were made.

Caveat Emptor: Since this isn't an academic or statistical debate, I felt relatively comfortable using wikipedia for general background information. Still, I always enjoy learning about new-to-me firearms and would be interested in hearing about anyone's personal experience with the gun.

That gun has some interesting lines. I can't tell if you're supposed to shoot it or stab something with it. Since I'm a shooter, not a collector, if I was going to spend $4k on a pistol it would be a custom 1911 or an Open Division race gun.
 
Threads like this are why I "hate" this forum. I keep finding new things I didn't know I wanted!!

That's a cool looking gun. Not $4k cool, mind you, but cool.

I saw one of these in a store window in the fifties. I was too young then to buy one but always wanted one. In the seventies I visited the NRA museum in Washington, DC and saw one on display.

Some time later I spoke about it to a gun store owner friend in Maryland. He smiled, walked into the back room and brought out two, one nickel plated and the other in blue, both new in the box. He knew the designer and had bought his remaining stock. I was so excited. He then proceeded to tell me all about the man and the pistol's history.

Naturally, I had to buy three, a blue one for shooting and one of each color for my collection. They've always reminded me of something Buck Rogers or Flash Gordon might have carried, so very cool.

A few years later I traded my space age shooter to a friend who wanted one in the worst way. I've never fired the remaining pair of safe queens. Considering today's prices, perhaps it's time to auction them off - but they would be difficult to part with.
Still, for the right price ... maybe. :rolleyes:

I ... like it. Maybe Ruger could add that to their list to clone for 2014.

The Ruger MkIII Buck Rogers Target Special.

Only half kidding.... ! I'd buy one!
