I like the Mossbergs. Budget? Oh, $500-600. Likes and dislikes of them?
Great advice. I'd look for one from the late 80s through late 90s. If you can't find one for some reason, next recommendation would be a Mossberg 590/A1.Your best gun for the money is to buy an old used Remington 870 Wingmaster hunting gun for $200, chop the barrel to 20", and spend the other$300- $400 you saved on practice ammo & range time.
It's not the arrow, it's the indian shooting it you really need to worry about.

Great post. This is one of those Ford vs Chevy type debates, I think most people would agree you can't go too wrong with either a mossberg 500 / 590 or a Remington 870 Express or Wingmaster just beware a lot of the tacticoool stuff is just that. Mossberg has recently (in the last couple of years) introduced several of these tacticoolized HD shotguns, just beaware if you buy into them that part of what your buying is the image, the question you should ask yourself is if you ever have to use it, do you want to find yourself in a court room with a DA holding the gun up as evidence, particularly if it includes wording about "zoombie slayer, etc. in large print on the side) Key features tend to be relatively short 18.5 to 21 inch barrel, an extended capacity magazine and maybe a good quality slide mounted weapons light.
Try to find BPS with long one piece magazine tube and 20" barrel. I looked over one at local Gander Mountain and the thing had SUPER smooth pump stroke. It must have been the finish they used on that model. The price was just under $500 if I recall correctly. I looked long and hard but don't seem to be able to find another one to buy.I like the Mossbergs. Budget? Oh, $500-600. Likes and dislikes of them?
