Big hog!

Got this big boy on Monday as he trotted out in the evening for a drink. 230 lbs and 3" cutters that were the sharpest I've seen. Will make a great euro mount!

Lots of hogs on property as can be seen in this video. Talk about a need for population control!

Flint - good guess! A Northern California hog indeed, from Lake County. Most boars on the ranch go to about 175 lbs so at 230 this was a big 'un.

Got him with a 30-06 at about 150 yards, 165 grain handload. Quartering away, bullet glanced off his spine, went thru the far lung, and stuck in the far shield. I'd been sitting on top of a knoll that overlooks a valley for a couple of hours when my buddy called me on the radio and said he was heading back to the truck, so I started walking back and there he trotted out. Funny how unexpected it is sometime.

I already have a similar hog with a shoulder mount and let's just say my wife doesn't share my enthusiasm for another....
 
Congrats! An '06 strikes again!!

Not really big for our part of the woods either. But I'd shoot him in a heart beat. People say over about 150-200 lbs they are no good to eat. Well last month a buddy of mine stabbed (yes he stabbed it with a 10" blade) a 402 lb boar. Now before anyone calls BS on me I swear it's true. He "hunts" with dogs. And let me tell you, that was some of the best pork I've ever eaten. The kind you eat till you're so full you are sick. But you just want one more bite.
 
I believe that, we used to slit their throats after the pit bulls pin them down. Big hogs around here run in the 400+lbs range, we had a 780 pounder killed near my old house a few years back, took three shots from an 06 to take him down and a fourth to finish him off, now that is a big tough pig.
 
Nice ugly mean-looking hog. (Don't invite me to dinner though.) If they stink, I give 'em away.
Catch him, cut him, notch him and kill him next year. :)
 
Nice pig! Good to see another CA hunter putting hogs on the ground! I have hunted a bit in Lake County but never had any luck. I'm limited to public land over there(Cache Creek and Indian Valley Reservoir). Killed quite a few in Sonoma County though! The owner of the property I hunt there killed one that went 330 last year. 3-1/2 inch cutters!

Nice hog, and nice rifle. Is that a Model 70 Featherweight? I like the "runt" piglet bringing up the very end of the video. Somehow that was comical.

thankfully we don't have a large pig problem here in Michigan. However, they are KOS for anyone with any valid permit or CPL. They better not come 'round here if they know whats good for 'em.
 
Geno - yes, M70 Featherweight in 30-06. Love it!

I ended up sending the head off to a guy who will clean it up with beetles and whiten it. Should look great.
 
I'm currently looking at M70s in .30-06, narrowed to Featherweight, Sporter or Super Grade, or maybe the Ultimate Shadow. It only took me two years to decide between the .22-250 Rem and the .243 Win; I made it easy, and just bought both. :D. The Featherweight is an awesome rifle!
