"Authorities haven’t released details about whether the man shot himself or if someone else was involved.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Jefferson Monroe Fire Department, Linn County Area Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner.
The Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy and determine the cause of death."
First of all the investigation has not been completed to determine whether if this is a self inflicted gun shot or other causes, i.e. accident or murder.
Second body armor generally only protects the chest/back torso area. Depending on the design the sides of the torso may be unprotected.
Third there are many calibers and types of bullets that will easily defeat body armor.
Fourth there are many areas of the body that cannot be protected by body armor such as the head, neck and femoral artery in the thigh which can cause death.
Fifth if you are that concerned about your safety why the heck are you placing yourself in harms way by going to that range?
