Defense Distributed has now obtained its Federal Firearms License for manufacturing.

Cody Wilsons has said in an arstechnica article, that he will wait for the add on license that allows for manufacture of fully auto firearms before selling some of the guns - or at least receivers - that Defense Distributed prints.

Does Defense Distributed really intend to produce these for sale? They are distributing the cad files freely, right? That doesn't sound like a smart business plan, to me. I wonder if the FFL is just cover for them to produce prototypes as they hone the process.

It's not entirely about making money.

I think that's right. (I should have put a ;) after my remark.) But I cannot imagine the ATF giving them an FFL unless the ATF thought it was entirely about making money.

And now that I think about it, what's this bit about holding out until they get a permit to do full auto? How realistic is that? They could only be sold to the military or law enforcement, right? Somehow, I don't think that's the ultimate goal of a crypto-anarchist.

Maybe the date in that image is more significant than we realize.

I'll second the "Not everyone has a 3D printer" part

Especially if the business actually works out well enough to invest in a metal based printer. Looking for replacement parts for that old gun made in 1932? draw it up and they'll make it. (Other shops may not touch such a thing because it is gun related)

They get people doing their R&D for them. They get good free advertizing.

It is entirely possible they want to be legit for machine guns due to constructive intent, not because they intend to sell them.

Coincidence you could abbreviate their name DD?

It's about Politics, what I want to see is Defense Distributed selling quality 3D printers that can produce guns parts, even if they are only lightweight receivers, mags, and sights. A nifty thing I'd like to see is plastic primers, the'yd probably only be one use primers but with a some potassium chlorate (mixed with red phosphorus) granules they'd be a game changer of sorts.

Check out kickstarter if you want one of your own, I have a fair quality one coming in July.

i dont know where u got $10 they sell cuomo mags for $50 each... i read the article and they want to sell lowers they make to raise $$$$ for further research... Id buy a lower from them... and use it for a .50 beowulf upper... :)

It's not real! Look at all the type on the document and then the two lines hat are COMPLETELY different. It is a real funny joke though.

What are you referring to?
That is a completely valid FFL.
