I shot my largest buck to date on Saturday. Our late gun season opened and I wasn’t able to go out in the morning. L I’ve been bow hunting this same area and have seen several 8 point whitetails (4x4 to you muley minded people), but nothing that warranted a shot yet. I had a buck tag and a doe tag for this gun season. I spotted what I thought was a does at first at about 300 yards and decided to sneak closer. After getting a better look I found it was one of the small 8 pointers I’d seen before. I got within about 65 yards of it just for the pure amusement of seeing how close I could get. He finally saw me and hastily departed.
I decided to setup and watch the same route he had just come from, and not 20 minutes later this guy walked out. Unfortunately he was heading a different way. At about 75 yards was only giving me a look at his rear end. He was nearing the end of my shootable angle (due to a road and a house) so I decided to take drastic measures. I ran about 15 yards behind some tall grass and dove out into the field in a prone position. A cold 15 mile per hour wind was working in my favor and he barely noticed.
He still hadn’t turn at all so now at about 90 yards I yelled out a quick “Hey!” He looked back and turned about 45 degrees. I took the shot. When the smoke cleared (love muzzleloaders) he was just standing there. I really didn’t think I missed. A split second later he started running back the way he came from and I could tell he wasn’t going far. Only about 25 yards as it turns out! He was nice enough to fall in the field where I could back my car up to him. J
His left side has two broken points. One toward the base of the main beam, which I think was probably another odd non-typical point and there is a nub of another point which broke off that thing sticking off the front (you can kind of see it pointing inward). So he used to have at least 6 scorable points on each side. The mass is great, especially on the left base. I’m planning to try my hand at a European (skull) mount with it. No, he won’t be the most tender, but most of him went through the grinder over the weekend anyway!
