No, I think it's different, in that if I could only have one gun it would be something extravagant.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be caught dead...theoretically...without at bare minimum a good snub nose revolver.

In my twenties Mom & Dad gave me a Winchester Big Bore '94 (.375 Win.) for a birthday. The Big Bore had just come out. Awful nice rifle. Wish I still had it. Big dummy. :(
Just a few accessories. Speedloaders for revolvers. Buttstock cartridge/shotshell carriers for normal rifles and shotguns. Mags for anything that uses those, from your Enfield to your machine gun. Slings. And ammo. Buy it cheap as you can so you can afford to shoot it.
I'm guessing there could be some advances in powder. Softer report, less flash. It would be nice to be able to fire the average weapon without going (temporarily?) deaf and, if nighttime, blind, as well.
Think .223 or 7.62x39 with a report like a .22 Short...or less.
