7-08 All the way!Such cartridges (7-08,.308,7x57,.284 Win) will do anything you'll ever need for N America and most other places as well except the thick skinned African critters. They're as close to ideal efficiency wise as you can get.
FWIW-I asked the same question over at RFC's CZ forum a while back.Everybody there likes them just as much as their Rimfire CZ'z and that's saying a lot.
Black bears are not all that tuff to kill.Pretty much any good .270 deer round will work just fine on them as well.I would go with either 130 or 150gr bullets. As far as factory loads go Federal and Rem/CL's have always shot well in my guns.

If you can go just a bit higher you can get an excellent 4x scope at a GREAT price here-

About a month ago I picked up a Savage MKII BV .22LR and topped it with Burris Sig Vee rings and Weaver Classic shotgun 4x scope. It's a real shooter right out of the box. Those Accutrigger's are nice.
Buy it!!!I have a Ruger M77 in 7x57 myself which has just a bit more case capacity and love it.For deer most any 140gr factory load would work great.I mostly used Rem CL's but since I started reloading have been trying others.Finding ammo should not be a problem either.IMO one great cartridge.
