Here in WV the 760 is a really popular deer rifle. Off the top of my head I can think of about half a dozen hunters I know that use them in a 270 or a 30-06. It really has a cult following here, and for good reason.

I've got a VX-1 2x7 on my Ruger M77 Mk II in 30-06 and it fits fine.
Granted, you don't have as much room to play with the eye relief, but considering the ample eye relief of the Leupold, that shouldn't be an issue.

Ash, I was thinking along the same lines for the stock, but I hadn't thought about taking wood out of the grip area, good idea!
