Back to the original question, he should get whichever one HE wants, and both are good choices. Chances are, he'll probably end up getting both at some point. I don't know many people who start shooting and only have one gun. Personally, I like DAO/LEM/DAK triggers better for most purposes...

I'd buy one for sure.

I was shooting a lot of .40 for a while when ammo was scarce. I also starting reloading for .40 and found brass and bullets easier to find than some other calibers. I still prefer 9mm but I like to have other options, including .40, .357Sig, and .45ACP.

I've been through a lot of holsters over the years and have narrowed down a short list of favorites for various types of guns. I've found a new one with the Ozarks Holster Co. hybrid IWB I just got for my G33. I found out about them from another gun forum. The holster only cost me $45...

I shoot 3-4 times a month all year round, almost always outside, and almost always in the morning. I think I actually like the heat of summer better than the coldest part of winter though (and it doesn't even get that cold here).

I only replaced mine since the metal disk on the end of the recoil spring assembly that contacts the barrel lug was badly bent. I noticed it after a range trip where I had my first and only FTF with the G30. I think most people replace them after 3000 rounds or so. I had about 2000 at the time...

I replaced my G30 recoil spring assembly recently, and the new ones do look like the one you have. The older ones were different.

I replaced my LCP with a 738SS a couple of years ago. It's been great.
