I do this with my 40 (factory 9MM barrel as drop-in a 9MM mags). Accuracy isn't that great though. I'm not sure if it's because of S&W's earlier issues with accuracy out of the 9MM or some other reason.

Hitting with the gun isn't a problem, it's more or less just one of those things that once you notice it, it bothers you like a splinter you can't quite get out. Would a decent gunsmith be able to correct the issue without causing too much cosmetic damage?

XD45 take down is incredibly simple, takes less than 10 seconds (much less if you're quick). I'm happy with mine, just have to remember to clean it occasionally after shooting reloads (another consideration for you, the polygonal rifling might argue with your lead reloads).
