I'm with 25cschaefer. If there isn't a full time course nearby see if there is an NRA sponsored summer course, usually a week long, that you could get to. I did that for several summers until I could take 2 years to go through Yavapai College Gunsmithing program in Prescott, AZ.
You might want to look at the Hodgdons site and check out 777. It seems to be a little hotter than Pyrodex and you might get an increase in velocity that way.
I'm looking into hog hunting in Okalohoma for late spring, planning to use a T/C Hawken .50... I might drag the ROA along just for fun.
I used up a bunch of 185 gr bullets in a Ruger BH .45LC with Bullseye and they worked great...as long as you can zero! I held velocity to about 800fps which, in my gun, caused it to shoot very low. I've since switched to 200 gr for 'light' loads.
I'm with Big Al.
I'm a retired deputy sheriff. I went to gunsmithing school and worked for another smith for 2 years. My garage is my shop... I buy sale items from distributors and sometimes have to sit on them for a while 'til they sell but that is business. Be prepared to spend some bucks...
Marlin .45-70 = versatility. I have several .45-70 rifles and a BFR .454. I shoot the rifles...
You can't beat the .45-70! Round ball loads to shoot in the back yard to buffalo stompers!! 10 gr. Unique and a 300 to 350 gr cast bullet id GREAT!!!
Charles Daly/KBI imported new large ring Mausers from Zastava a couple years ago. They are a true large ring. I have a barreled action (.308 Win) on Gunbroker right now, item 70948634. I have built several nice rifles on these actions and you won't regretit if you go for one. Same action...
I might suggest that you use a stone instead of a file and lightly stone the bottom of the front sight instead of the barrel dovetail. Should only take a few strokes...
Howdy! I'm new to posting on the boards but have been reading them for awhile. The Blackhawk topic won't let me pass by! I'm a Blackhawk/Vaquero junkie...all are .45 Colt, some are convertibles, most are blue and all are excellent shooters! I put together a 3 1/2" birdshead with Bisley...
