    Unexpected visitor downrange

Here in Carson City, NV, we have a herd of wild mustangs who wander across the range backstop at around 400 yards. We don't shoot horses here.

Ruger No 1 reliabilty with belted magnums?

When I was living in Central Africa a friend asked me what I would recommend for him to bring for hunting. His problem was that he was a southpaw while his son was a righty, and they wanted to use one rifle. I recommended a Ruger No 1 in .375 H&H. That's what they brought, and they were very...

    Primer question??

Suggestion: Load 50 of each, not 12. You'll barely close the car door at the range before it's time to go home if you only have 24 loaded rounds. And now that you're getting into this reloading stuff you'll figure out out that one of the reasons you're doing so is so you can shoot a LOT more.

Why small primers in .45 ACP?

Please excuse me if this has been asked here before, but I have seen people advertising .45 ACP with small pistol primers. Is there some accuracy issue here? Seems to me as if large pistol primers would be better for igniting a case full of powder.

identifying (and problems with) Mauser (?) bolt

One thing that modification to .30-06 would mean with the M93 is that the feed ramp is probably ground down to allow feeding of the longer round. If the feed ramp is ground at all you potentially have a weakened lug engagement, which is a dangerous situation. If it is one of the shorter...

Looking for an action drill fixture

I'm looking for a drill fixture for drilling a Mauser action. Wheeler Engineering used to make a nice one, but I don't see it available at Brownells or Midway. Is there another one out there? Or a used one that is still serviceable that someone would like to part with? Fred (epoletna)

So my sporterized mauser is definitely not 8mm...

Nice looking gun, although whoever finished the wood scrimped on filling the pores. That's a shame, because everything else about the rifle says "good work." My guess would be 9.3X62 except you said the barrel was 8 mm. If it is, I would guess the 8-'06 sounds about right. I have made...

    anyone own an Auto Mag?

East Pasadena Firearms was my LGS when I was in high school and college, and Harry Sanford showed off the Automag prominently in his store. He was proud of the design but I was never particularly tempted. I did, however, buy several other guns from him and had some smithing done by his guy in...

The pistol that James Bond should carry!

I love my PPK/S. Not because of Bond -- just because it's a fine looking pistol. But I have replaced it as a carry gun with the Sig 226 in .40. If you're gonna carry a pistol, it damn sure ought to be one that will stop the person coming toward you. I was never confident the .380 (or 9mm...

    375 h&h

Oh, I did have to re-stock it. Chasing a wart hog one day I tripped over a root and broke it at the wrist. I drove into Arusha and bought some two-part epoxy and electrical tape and fixed it in the hotel room that night. It kept working for the rest of that safari, but the only electrical...

    375 h&h

My .375 H&H is a pre-'64 mod 70 African. I used it in Africa 4 years and loved it. Elephant, Cape Buffalo, gnu and gerenuk all fell to it, as well as a few wart hogs. One rifle that does everything -- what more could one ask?
