    M1A scope mounting THAT difficult?

M1As can be scoped, but that isn't all you'll deal with if you go that route. Smith Enterprise makes a very high-quality mount, but I prefer a product by Bassett Machine, which comes with an ingenious torque wrench included. One does have to periodically check and tighten the mounting bolt...

    Accurizing the M1A

DVDCRR, re: "Now I am getting a hankering for another one to complement my standard M1a rifle, and thinking hard about the LRB." Don't know if it is of interest to you, but noticed recently that Fulton Armory is now in the M1A business. They guarantee their premium versions of the M1A to...

    .223 for Beginners

Re: "I think you're selling both calibers short on the distance they can shoot accurately. It depends on what you call accuracy of course but people do use .223 rifles to compete at 1000 yards especially in youth divisions." Cee Zee, I do realize that I was being somewhat conservative on the...

    Accurizing the M1A

Re: "I'm pretty unpopular in the M1A world for challenging people to produce statistically significant groupings showing M1As, whether accurized or not, to be sub-MOA." Truth-tellers are sometimes not the most-popular of people, but I respect your dedication to reality rather than myth. Per...

    Accurizing the M1A

That's good advice - thanks for sharing it. There's always more the individual can do to become a better rifleman - no question of that.

    .223 for Beginners

Lots of very well-informed advice by others already, but I'll throw in mine as well on the possibility it will benefit you. I am a late-comer and convert to the AR game; I am from an era when "serious" rifles had calibers that began with the number "3" as in .308, 30-06, 300WM, etc. However...

    Accurizing the M1A

Anyone here have extensive experience with accurizing the Springfield Armory M1A? Considering having the stock on mine glass-bedded - and have heard pros-and-cons on having it done. My rifle was sold to me as a National Match, but it actually is a "loaded" version, which is SA's version...

Member Needing Guidance On My Next Long Range Rifle

JW74, Just to throw in my two cents worth of experience on this subject, you could do a lot worse than own a Savage 110FCP HSP .338 Lapua Magnum. Paired with a quality optic and carefully-selected match-grade loads, this set-up will take you well past the 1,500 meter mark. Savage makes a...

Long range. What do you like over 308 and why?

For really reaching out, a rifle chambered in 338 Lapua Magnum - or perhaps a Cheytec .408 if you can afford one, or a 50BMG. A source I respect recently mentioned using 7mm Rem-Mag as a long-range cartridge. Less frontal area to the bullet than thirty-cal slugs - so lower drag, med-weight...

    .308 to 30-06 loads

You're probably better off salvaging the bullets, as rifles chambered in .308 Win. and 30-06 both use .308 caliber slugs - but skip the idea of reusing the powder or primers. The marginal savings you'd gain from trying to reuse them wouldn't be worth the risk or the hassle.

Greetings to everyone... A friend told me about this website, and after reading it for the first time, I wasted no time in joining. As one can see from my handle, I hail from the deep south - specifically, the great state of Georgia, where I was born more years ago than I like to count. I...

Video: FG42 beats BAR in 2-gun match

Re: "The basic complaints I have read were it weighed a ton and the 20 round magazine capacity was insufficient. Not perfect, but still, John Browning hit a homer. The man was an incredible designer, his designs worked." It's comparing apples and oranges to compare the BAR and the FG42. The...

    anybody regret getting an M1A

Re: "Lastly, my 50 year old eyes arent as sharp so I do need a scope...the M1A is a bit of a challenge (and pricey) to put a traditional scope on it and stay solid" Love the M1A, but it is a beast to use with a scope or optic. After a couple of false starts, found success with a Bassett...

Why does military use .338 Lapua and not .300 Weatherby Mag?

Top-tier operators get considerable latitude in what gear they choose for a given mission. The reliance on the venerable .308, 300WM and 50BMG means that these cartridges are well-sorted out ballistically and that there's plenty of sniper dope on them within the services. Standardizing on a few...

Long range. What do you like over 308 and why?

What is long range? Anything well within the supersonic envelope of the cartridge in question, i.e., the bullet being fired. Extreme long-range could be thought of as anything at the outer edge of the envelope in terms of supersonic flight - and perhaps also into the transonic and sub-sonic...
