+1 for the CZ75. i find it to be a great pistol for almost anyone, starter or not. of course like most said though, whatever fits you the best and feels good in the hand is the one you should get. however, if you're willing to spend $1500 on one gun, i'd say just get two "cheaper" ones like...

i have held and fired the Ruger SR9 which i quite enjoy, too bad they don't make the .45 yet to compare! i actually like their P345 but they aren't very common in these parts so getting my hands on one isn't very easy. for the price though, hard to say no i really do like the 1911 platform...
