OK, but the most important is: for defensive purposes buy guns which are known as reliable products. For small amount of money you probably can not buy such gun, the only exception is probably the Makarov. For inexpensive, but good defensive gun, I would buy a used SW or Taurus snubbie...

jmilliron, Good lighting is more important than a good lens (although I used the sharpest Canon macro). This picture was made with a cheap 500w reflector (directed to the ceiling) and a few light bouncer cards. Post porcessing is mandatory with digital pictures.
