If it's purely a fun gun, then an AR15 with the sheer amount of aftermarket parts for it is pretty hard to beat. If caliber's your thing then an AR10-esque might be up your alley.
For a .30-06 rifle the Garand is one of the better values out there, especially when taking the nostalgia value...

In a nutshell, the term "assault weapon" is really a misnomer used to describe a gussied up weapon that looks deadly. It's nothing more than a term used by the ill informed to help rile up the masses...
Not my video, but I found a high speed video of a guy shooting his WASR 10. I'm kind of curious as to whether the barrel flexing is a fault of the gun or the manufacturer.

This topic really needs a poll. The suspense is killing me.
One thing about Automatic Transmission Fluid and plastic/polymers is to try to limit the amount. I've had a bad experience where pure ATF rendered some plastic I was trying to strip some paint off of into a brittle, crumbly mess.
Sadly, this'll probably be on the chopping block for DoD budget cuts.
It is a very interesting concept though and hopefully they can use what's learned there to modify existing designs.
