    What is this .308 round?

L31A1=7.62 NATO blank. Sounds like the guy you met at the gun show may have been "touched" (or "teched" as they said it where I grew up). BTW, don't try to reload it, they are made of thinner brass.

    FN Guns

I also own an FNP-9 and I love it. Absolutely no problems so far with thousands of rounds though it. Accurate, light, and the controls are all in the right place for me. Last I heard FN owns Browning.

Opinion of the Lee Load master

This is extremely important with the LM. All the way up and all the way down with even pressure and a deliberate stroke. The LM does not like for one to jerk the handle. The primer feed is the week point and jerking around on it will cause primer misfeeds. I would love for Lee to adopt a primer...

    338 Black Talons

I have personally seen .338 black talons. My BIL has several boxes. They did make them in rifle calibers.

    45 ACP bullets

+1 George is a good guy to deal with too. A bit slow to ship, but he does batch production so it's understandable.

Checking the temp of melted lead?

You might want to check this one out. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=96451 I don't own one but plan on buying one in the near future. Inexpensive and accurate enough for casting.

    Best way to clean brass?

I've used... Coffee pot cleaner (strong citric acid solution) Viniger (strong acetic acid solution) Lime-away (strong whatever solution) The lime-away works best for me. Just use a couple of squirts in a sink full of water and let them soak. It removes corrosion and will let you see...

IME, the most accurate ballistic tip bullet I've used was:

I've found that the good old Nosler B-tips performed best for me

Ammo shelf life - Too old?

If that is the only "rust" you are seeing, you should be fine. Those rounds look shootable to me.

    Old reloads and old powder.

That stuff is all probably junk, just bring it by my house and I'll get rid of it for you! No seriously, if there aren't any corrosion issues, shoot it and enjoy. Most mil-surp ammo is much older, probably stored under similar conditions, and goes bang every time. Modern powders will last...

    Starline brass?

Don't want to beat a dead horse, but when I buy new brass Starline is practically all I buy. It's very good stuff. And I'll second buying direct from them. You'll find they usually have as good if not better prices than most.

    SKS's getting more expensive?

I'm glad I only paid $79 for mine "back in the day". But they are a lot of fun and I would consider paying $250 for one if I didn't already have one. Frankly, I enjoy it more than my AR and it also makes a decent short range deer rifle with the right ammo.

Can I use Break Free CLP to lube cases?

Nope. Not a good idea. It can probably affect your powder and possibly deaden primers.

    Eek, that's a new one.

I've had many sideways primers over the years. Crushed flat like yours. None have gone bang on me. Others are right here in that it takexs a sharp strike to set one off.

Is a gas check necessary for lead .45 acp?

No. A GC is not required for 45ACP.
