It'd have to be some kind of military rifle. I probably wouldn't want anything crew-served though, as that's too specialized (sorry machine guns). Maybe just a good quality assault rifle? How about a select-fire SCAR?

Granted, you're going to get a poor seal because of silver's increased hardness over lead. But there are ways around this, such as a gas check, or better yet, a sabot. I see no reason why a saboted silver bullet round wouldn't work quite effectively.

Yup, the simple solution here is to always carry your guns cased. Even though it might still technically be legal for you to carry them around uncased (depending on where you live), do you really want to invite all that extra hassle? Let them see the long case and guess, than see the rifle...

Just to add to the chorus -- if it's an original 03 Springfield in military condition, don't mess with it. You can find sporterized Springfields (if that's what you really want) at a pretty cheap price, and you won't be messing up the value of your nice original Springfield along the way.
