Good Deal: Nikon M-223 scope promo (free mount through May 31)

Nikon is running a promo for a free M-223 mount with purchase of an M-223 scope through May 31st. It's not a manufacturer rebate kind of thing; the free mount actually comes with the scope (not bad, right?). The M-223 has been on my radar for awhile and I think this promotion is actually going...

Dream rifle if you had an unlimited budget?

It'd have to be some kind of military rifle. I probably wouldn't want anything crew-served though, as that's too specialized (sorry machine guns). Maybe just a good quality assault rifle? How about a select-fire SCAR?

    Silver Bullets

Granted, you're going to get a poor seal because of silver's increased hardness over lead. But there are ways around this, such as a gas check, or better yet, a sabot. I see no reason why a saboted silver bullet round wouldn't work quite effectively.

Antique guns trigger UMSL campus scare

Yup, the simple solution here is to always carry your guns cased. Even though it might still technically be legal for you to carry them around uncased (depending on where you live), do you really want to invite all that extra hassle? Let them see the long case and guess, than see the rifle...

    Weatherby Vanguard

My Remington 700 5R came in an H-S Precision stock and it's definitely free-floated (passes the dollar bill test). Regarding the original question, I had the opportunity to shoot a Weatherby Vanguard in its plastic stock configuration recently and I did not like the stock at all. It really...

    Remington 700 5-R MilSpec Barrel

I've heard other people saying that that's a rumor that isn't actually true.

Best AK on the Market now in 7.62X39?

OK, I'll bite. Why is the Saiga better than a WASR 10? With the WASR 10 it looks like you start off, for the most part, with what you're already trying to get to. With the Saiga, not so much?

Would you trust your life to a .38 special?

Yes I would, although the .38 Special is pretty large compared to its power, right? I'm just thinking that the case is significantly heavier than it needs to be, if it were a modern cartridge using modern pressures. Unfortunately, there aren't too many revolvers chambered in, say, 9 mm. And...

    03 Springfield

Just to add to the chorus -- if it's an original 03 Springfield in military condition, don't mess with it. You can find sporterized Springfields (if that's what you really want) at a pretty cheap price, and you won't be messing up the value of your nice original Springfield along the way.

    Springfield for lion and rhino

Go read "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber". It's my favorite short story by Hemingway that uses the African hunting milieu. In it, the guide uses a .505 Gibbs rifle. At one point (I won't give away too much) he has to use it to take down a charging animal that the Springfield .30-06...

Is .338 Lapua Magnum sufficient for African Big Game?

Whoops, I made an error in the original posting. I said that .338 Lapua Magnum's muzzle energy was 6,500 lb-ft. That's wrong. That's the muzzle energy in Joules. The muzzle energy in lb-ft is more like 5,000. I guess that changes things somewhat. That puts it a bit more on par with .375...

Is .338 Lapua Magnum sufficient for African Big Game?

Okay, first off, this is a highly theoretical question (to me), but please indulge me nonetheless. Is .338 Lapua Magnum a good cartridge for African Big/Dangerous Game? I know it's below the minimum bullet diameter restrictions that a lot of African governments have in place, but the actual...

    Recommend a Fun Gun!

Well, if the .30-06 of a Garand is too expensive per shot, how about something like an AK-74 or the Saiga knock-off of it? That has super cheap ammo, but it's still center-fire and has good knock-down power.

Holy crap- AUGS for a grand!

These concerns are so theoretical to the vast, vast majority of firearms purchasers in the US though (we're talking 99.999%). Now, granted, a lot of gun folk use very extremely unlikely events to justify their purchases ... but not all of us. The reduced ability to fire an MSAR with the...

    Recommend a Fun Gun!

An M1 Garand? That definitely has the fun factor. You can get a rack-grade one from the CMP for $500.
