    follow-up shots with a bolt

I have made follow up shots with bolt guns. It was not always pretty. Then I started hunting with a K31. That straight pull bolt made a follow up shot so easy. Rifle never left my shoulder, and my sights followed the deer continuously.

Life Magazine photo essay on 1950s school firearm instruction

When I was in college, a great many of my friends had grown up without any introduction to firearms safety. They were the most dangerous dudes around. A few of us started taking them to the range and teaching them safety and proper handling. So many parents pretend that their kids will never...

    How much gets thrown away?

My wife has a Kitchenaid and we have used that grinder. Then I bought a dedicated grinder, and I will never use the Kitchenaid one again. I was amazed at the power and speed a dedicated grinder gave me. At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, I will just say I bought an STX Turboforce...

Would you take a shot at dusk?

As long as it is legal shooting hours, and I can see what I am shooting, well enough to place the shot where I want it, I will take the shot. I have rarely had to track my own deer in the dark, but have helped plenty of friends track in the dark, and I am by now pretty good at it. So I like to...

Does anyone else consider themselves strictly a meat hunter?

I consider myself to be primarily a meat hunter. I will usually pass on a buck in favor of a doe, but every now and again, I see a buck that inspires me to shoot it; usually because it looks like it will never be a trophy, and I like to pick out the weak ones from the herd. However, I have...

Fellow deer hunters what gun are you using for deer season

Same as last year, Swiss K31. Funnest deer gun I have ever used.

    The Game Taste?

I like to soak some cuts in brine before guests come over. It tends to bind out some of the heme iron from the meat, making it a little less strong tasting. Also, some of the deer I serve can be a bit dry because it is so lean. I remedy that with a rub of olive oil and seas salt or kosher...

    Why I hunt

My kids always think they want to try fast food...then on the rare occasion they get it, they don't like it. I think more families would do well to grow and kill their own food. We are indeed lucky.

    Why I hunt

My wife is a nutritionist, and our family eats primarily deer, then next is beef and hog raised by our friends. Store bought meat is rarely seen in our house. My kids will hardly eat a burger at a restaurant, as they say it doesn't taste right.

    Bye, Bye, Hunting Rifle.........

If you have to give up a gun, I think that would be about the best way.

    7.5x55 Swiss for Hunting

I took several deer with my K31 last season. It has supplanted my .30-06. The exit wounds are impressive. A darn fine round for deer. (soft points)
